Update 11/18/11:
Kalah qualifies for MAESSR’s Home for the Holidays program. For dogs in this program, adoption fees will be waived through the end of the year. Help a special Springer’s wish come true – welcoming one into your home may be the most heartwarming gift of this holiday season!!
When Kalah’s owner died unexpectedly, she needed to return to MAESSR’s care. Fortunately, a foster home was ready and waiting to welcome her. She has fit in from the start and is living with 3 other springers and a resident cat. One ESS is close to her age; the other two are youngsters, ages 2 and under. Kalah and the senior Springer have become fast friends but she is most accepting of the whole pack.
Kalah had a trip to the vet with her foster family and checked out well. She has some allergies and mild arthritis, both of which are being treated to keep her comfy. The vet discovered she is slightly overweight – which her foster family will help her with – and that she is somewhat deaf and has vision loss in one eye. None of these aging issues dampen Kalah’s days; she continues to enjoy short walks, car rides, and baths!
When it comes to her manners, Kalah is a perfect lady. She doesn’t counter surf or get on the furniture. You should see her face when the other springers jump up onto the couch with their parents. Kalah seems to be saying -You can do THAT here? She is right there alongside the others for attention and often just puts her head on her foster mom’s lap when she’s sitting at the desk.
No one needs to teach this senior any new tricks. Kalah is an absolute doll and will settle with her forever family as quickly and easily as she has her foster family. She would love a home for the holidays and will bring extra special joy to those sharing her golden years!!
Original:
When her Maryland family was moving and could not take their senior Springer with them, they relinquished Kalah to a local shelter where staff members quickly called MAESSR to transfer her to our care.
When Kalah came into foster care and was taken to the vet for a check-up, she was the perfect patient. Despite being poked and prodded, Kalah never flinched or made a sound. The vet discovered that she had pneumonia, so she was put on antibiotics to which she has been responding very well. Once her course of antibiotics is completed, Kalah will return to the vet for a recheck and for her heartworm test.
Kalah is a total sweetheart of a Springer who has been a very good houseguest for her foster family. Displaying very good house manners, Kalah does not get on the furniture, counter-surf, or get into the trash. She is currently residing with another senior foster and a resident Springer, cats, and older children, getting along just fine with all of them. Kalah likes everyone that she meets when she is out for her walks and she does well on her leash. If her foster mom wants to go somewhere in the car, Kalah is a willing passenger, enjoying her car rides very much.
Watch for more on Kalah as her health improves. She is one very sweet dog!
