Update 11/26/2020: “June loves to burrow in blankets and towels and enjoys being covered with a blanket while she naps on the couch.”
Curious about English Toy Spaniels? Here are some facts about them and more about June in particular. June’s coloration is called a Blenheim coat color and although her coat is now about 2-3 inches in length, this breed will grow long hair that needs to be brushed weekly and kept trimmed.
One trait of the English Toy Spaniel is burrowing. June loves to burrow in blankets and towels and enjoys being covered with a blanket while she naps on the couch. June is not able to jump up onto a couch or chair and she is wary of jumping down as well; therefore, her human needs to be committed to picking her up and placing her down.
This is a breed that enjoys being inside 95% of the time, so June has no idea of what to do when a leash is attached to her but should be harnessed if walked. Also, during the heat of the summer, she cannot be outside for too long as she is a brachycephalic dog and she has an extremely shortened snout that makes her almost appear flat-faced, which differentiates her from some breeds that simply have shorter snouts.
June loves to snuggle on laps, chests, and necks. She is well-behaved in her crate and sleeps through the night. She is a snorer and has no problem being crated alone in a living room or kitchen so that her humans may get a restful night’s sleep.
Although June will eat her food in one sitting and will poop and pee outside, she is not yet housetrained so taking her out more than once per hour will help. She has spent up to 8 hours in her crate at night but has peed in the corner on a towel. Also, she will not go outside on her own; so, she is picked up and placed out in the grass. She usually will run straight back to the door but this habit is being ignored so that she will move around the yard and eliminate in the yard. After waiting at the door for five minutes, she will run off by herself to the grass and pee and poop.
June has spent time with an extremely docile 9 year old Cocker Spaniel who decided that a Toy dog was just not her cup of tea. A few times, June would hiss, flare her lips, or lunge at the host dog, so the host dog has decided to follow suit, but no physical confrontation has occurred. June may possibly need to be the only dog in the household. Some male Toy breeds have a “Napoleon Complex” when it comes to bigger dogs, but June may possibly have a “Marie Antoinette Complex.”
If you are looking for a dog that is a total love bug who wants to be held and pampered, this is the dog for you. At 10.5 pounds and standing about 10 inches tall, June is very easy to maintain and care for. Bring this little June bug into your life!
Original: “Not having had much socialization to the world around her, June is scared by everything.”
June and Johnny are English Toy Spaniels whose West Virginia owner passed away suddenly. A Good Samaritan took them in, trying to help; unfortunately, it became apparent that they needed more than this kind person could provide. She found MAESSR through a relative of one of our volunteers. MAESSR was more than happy to help these two little sweethearts.
Not having had much socialization to the world around her, June is scared by everything. Previously, she had not been kept in a home; since coming into foster care a couple of weeks ago, she has learned a great deal! She is not housetrained but is learning.
June is a major CUDDLE BUG! She will let her person hold her and pet her 24 hours a day. As a result of being carried so much, June is not used to being on a leash. Being carried is so much nicer! So is riding in the car! June is a good passenger.
Please note that MAESSR will require the adoptive family to take their new family member through a series of obedience classes within 90 days of adoption. MAESSR only places puppies – even older ones like June– in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience. MAESSR believes the decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. Obedience lessons will help June to adjust to her new life.
June is a bit overwhelmed by trying to figure out all of the new things in her world. Living with other dogs in her foster home that are all bigger than she is has been perplexing. She is trying to figure out what they are all about—so big and bouncy and always running and playing with each other. Her foster mom is sure that June’s sweet personality will help her overcome all of the scary new things in the world, even big Springer spaniels!
Excellent for the vet staff when she went to get spayed, June impressed them with her sweetness and size. What a sweet little baby!
This pretty little lady is going to make some person a wonderful, loving companion.
