Juliet was relinquished to MAESSR after she began growling at the eighteen month old baby in her relatively new home in New Jersey. Juliet was purchased at the age of five years and had only been in her new home for several months. During that time she made great friends with the father and the ten year old daughter; however, she was not fond of the baby or the other small child’s quick movements.
This love’s vet evaluation indicated that she was recently spayed and had a dental. She has been given a mouth rinse to help battle some bacteria. She did test positive for a UTI and is being treated with two weeks of antibiotics. She was wonderful for the groomer showing she is used to being on the table and primped.
The new girl in town arrived at her foster home and adjusted fairly easily to the two male Springers and one mini Dachshund. She was not as easily accepting of the other female Springer; however, with time and corrections she adjusted and now lives in harmony with all. She is even left loose with them when no one is home. During her stay several dogs have visited for a day or weekend. What she seemed to do was pick one dog she would growl at when they walked near her.
The dogs are fed separately and no incidents have occurred over food or toys. She seems to growl when she becomes excited about getting attention from her people and other dogs approach. Her foster family has been moving away when this happens and redirecting her attention. Juliet will need a home that is small child free and has a strong leader who will not baby her but give her firm guidance on what is and is not acceptable.
Juliet was nervous for the first few days in foster care and did not eat her food until some enticing topper was added to the bowl. Since then she has not missed a meal. And, this good girl does not counter-surf. She did not get on the furniture for the first six weeks, but has now taken to lying next to her foster brothers on their blankets. Juliet does not chew inappropriately. In general she is a wonderful indoor dog!
Miss J. is about 90% housetrained but has had accidents in the house, sometimes peeing when her people are not looking. When she goes out, she wants to come right back in. Her foster family learned when they pointed a chuck-it launcher at her and told her to go potty, she would turn around and go back and pee. She needs to be watched and praised for going outdoors. She does get very excited when she needs to go out. At night she sleeps on a dog bed in the master bedroom. She is quiet and settled all night.
Juliet just knows “sit,” “off,” “no,” “come,” “wait,” and “in.” She spins on a leash making sure her person is following her but then stops, making walking difficult. This will take practice. Juliet is nervous in the car; poor girl was shaking the entire ride. She calms when petted. She is a bit overweight and will not swim with the resident dogs. She is not interested in playing or running in the yard. She will chew a few minutes a day on a hard bone.
Juliet wants attention 24/7. She craves being loved and will paw at her person for pets. She is eager to please and will be great to train for obedience. She could be in a home with other dogs as long as her adopters are aware that she will need a strong leader who makes sure she learns the boundaries. However she would love a person all of her own.
