Josie’s previous family loved her very much, but were unable to provide for her and relinquished her to MAESSR. Josie is very pretty, sweet, and timid, but not overly submissive. She seems to prefer the company of her foster mom over dad, following her from room to room. Josie will steal her foster mom’s clothes from the dirty laundry basket and carry them back to her kennel to have them close to her. She does not chew them. Having her foster mom’s scent close to her must be comforting. Josie likes to have access to her kennel, and will lie there often.
Josie likes to lay by your side, and have her ears rubbed. She loves receiving attention. She will stand up and put her paws on you to beg for more attention. The “off” command needs some work. She wants to be on the sofa or bed with you, but will not try to jump up again after she’s been reprimanded. The first day in her foster home, Josie jumped up on the kitchen table (via the bench) several times! She hasn’t done it since, so it must have resulted from feeling nervous in her new surroundings.
Josie wasn’t thrilled about getting a bath – she kept trying to get out of the bathtub. However, she was very patient with having her paw hair clipped with electric trimmers, and she’s shown no fear of the vacuum cleaner or lawn mower.
Josie gets along fine the other dogs and cats in her foster home. She has shown no aggression over food, toys, etc. However, if one of the resident dogs gives her attitude she will stick up for herself. She does not try to dominate the dogs in her home, but she will not submit to them either. It was reported that Josie attended obedience, and she knows several commands; she is crate-trained and housetrained. She did have two accidents in her new home and her foster family believes it is schedule related. Previously, she was let out each day at 3:30 when the kids got home from school and when given free access in the house when no one was home for the afternoon two days in a row she went in the house. She has been crated since and has not had any accidents in her crate. Josie’s foster mom thinks that she will adjust to any new schedule if helped along (hence the crate) and will be just fine.
Josie hasn’t been tested with children yet. She did live with children in her last home, and it was reported that she loved them. She’s leery of strangers, but after a slow introduction, she will relax.
Josie went to the vet and was updated on all her inoculations, including rabies. She was very nervous to go to the vet and urinated in the lobby. She is Heart worm negative and now on Heart worm preventative. The vet prescribed an antibiotic because Josie’s been chewing on the inside of her back leg. The skin is irritated, and was slightly broken open in a couple places. I shaved the area, and it is now scabbed closed. No evidence of fleas, etc. The vet thinks it may be nerves. Josie’s foster mom is going to keep an eye on it and will look for signs of allergies. Josie also has an umbilical hernia. The vet was not concerned, said it probably will not cause any problems throughout her lifetime. At 56 pounds, Josie needs to lose a few pounds. The vet said she is overweight, but not obese.
Josie, is looking for a family who will set boundaries for her, keep her at a healthy weight, and give her plenty of exercise and love to build her confidence and allow her to feel happy and secure. Are you going to be the one to give her pets and love and receive back love and adoration ten-fold?
