Jimmy came to MAESSR when his family circumstances changed. With two young children in the home and the father being deployed to Afghanistan, it was felt that Jimmy needed more attention than he was getting.
Arriving in his new foster home on December 26, Jimmy brought along his Christmas stocking and a big bag of doggie cookies to share with the resident dogs. Since coming from a one-dog home, he was a little fearful, but soon warmed up to the resident pack and now asks them to play with him. His initial nervousness was also due to the fact that he had never been away from his family before. However, with lots of love and attention, he is beginning to blossom into a wonderful companion. Jimmy craves attention and will sit with his chin on your knee, looking up at you with his big, soulful eyes.
Jimmy’s history of a seizure disorder is being successfully treated with inexpensive medications and he is doing well as a result. Since being in his foster home, Jimmy has decided that the meals served there are delicious! Part of his breakfast consists of a half slice of potato bread spread with some peanut butter so his pills will stick to it. He takes this breakfast spread and treats very politely. This is followed by some regular dog food followed by a big drink of water to wash it all down. Yum! Jimmy is going to the vet and the groomer soon so his foster mom will be able to verify if he is indeed well behaved at both venues as was reported.
Exploring the outdoors in his new foster home is something that Jimmy loves! He has met the resident horses nose-to-nose and decided they are big but nothing to be alarmed about. He has also met the cat and basically ignores him. When a big morning walk brought him to an ice covered creek, Jimmy was a little wary of crossing the ice to get to the other side. He braved the crossing and although he broke through the ice and got wet, he was none the worse for wear.
Jimmy’s house manners are pretty good. He will occasionally jump up on your or put his front paws up on the counter to see what he can see when he is excited. When he first came into foster care, Jimmy had several accidents plus loose stools probably due to stress and change in food. These problems have improved recently. This good boy does not get up on the furniture and he walks fairly well on a leash. As for commands, he will sit and stay to a degree and he does understand the word no. Jimmy LOVES car rides and wants to go each time you head toward the car. He seems like a pretty intelligent boy who listens well. In one short week he has gotten his foster family’s household pretty much figured out. For a 3-year-old pup (soon to be 4), he is very playful, but also enjoys a nap on the throw rug.
His foster family has discovered one of Jimmy’s endearing idiosyncrasies. Jimmy will lay his head on your lap and then one paw comes up and then the other. Next thing you know, his whole body is draped over your lap but his hind legs are still on the floor. After you scratch him a little, his eyes close and he drops to the floor. Then, he gets up and goes to rest in his doggie bed.
Jimmy will be a wonderful companion for someone who has lots of love and affection to give this big boy.
