Original: “A total love-bug, this precious girl is learning how to live outside of a crate/kennel.”
Jetta came into MAESSR’s care when the Maryland kennel she had spent her entire life voluntarily closed. A total love-bug, this precious girl is learning how to live outside of a crate/kennel. She is very smart and picks up on expectations and cues very quickly. She is the funniest drinker her foster mother has ever seen! She buries her entire face up to the eyes in the water bowl and bites at the water in the back of the water dish. She comes up dripping wet from her face, ears, throat, and chest!
Housetrained, Jetta learned to use the dog-door within hours of arriving at her foster home. She will also go and sit by the door to signal that she needs to go out, but she doesn’t make a sound so you have to watch carefully. Jetta clearly feels safe and comfortable in her crate. Currently, the door to the crate is always open so that she can come out whenever she wants. She has free run of the house at all times and gets along beautifully with the resident male Springers.
Jetta loves to climb into laps and be petted for hours. Don’t sit down unless you want a lap full of Jetta! She absolutely loves the sofa and bed and who can blame her? At night, she prefers to sleep right up against her foster mother or foster grandmother. A very low energy girl, she craves affection and wants to be with her foster mother and grandmother at all times.
Got any stuffed animal squeaky toys? Jetta loves, loves, loves squeaky stuffies, and has quite a collection of toys sharing her crate! Showing her desire to play and socialize, Jetta engages the younger resident male in a game of tug. He is much bigger and stronger than she, but he plays at her level and even lets her win!
In the kitchen, Jetta is a counter-surfer; so don’t turn your back on food or it will be gone! She doesn’t have access to the trash, but her foster mother has no doubts that she would be a trash-diver if given the chance. With time and training, she will learn that house dogs aren’t supposed to behave this way. Jetta is grabby when it comes to food, but she doesn’t guard her bowl, nor does she bother the oldest resident dog who is a very slow eater.
At this point, Jetta doesn’t know any commands and her foster mother is working on “gentle,” “sit,” and “off.” Quite timid, she simply lies down when her foster mother clips a leash onto her collar. If encouraged, she will walk a few steps before lying down again. Building up her courage and increasing her exposure to new experiences are priorities. In the car, she will climb into your lap unless she is restrained.
At the vet, Jetta was a total sweetheart, offering her belly to everyone she met. Her only protest was trying to pull away when getting a shot; other than that, she simply stayed still and allowed the vet and the tech to do anything they wanted to her. Since Jetta arrived with a short coat, she hasn’t been to a groomer yet. She was good for her bath, though; got her foster mother soaking wet by climbing into her lap, but she was good!
Jetta needs someone who will be patient with her while she adjusts to her new life. She wants someone who will let her cuddle and who will pet her for hours. She’s a real love-bug!
