Original: “Jesse’s small size and happy attitude make him an easy houseguest.”
Jesse and his litter sister Emma were bought as pups from a small breeder at the horse stable where her prior owners’ daughters rode. When the owners moved out of state, a friend kept the dogs in West Virginia. When that friend was leaving for graduate school, the owners contacted MAESSR and drove eight hours to get these two to a foster home.
Though Jesse was an outside dog, he has not had any housetraining or marking issues in his foster home. He also shares food and water bowls with no issues. His foster folks aren’t sure of his signal to go out, but since the resident female goes out every four hours, this seems plenty for Jesse. He usually sleeps with his head atop his sister’s butt at night in a shared crate. When left alone during the day, he’s just gated in one area, though since he doesn’t do anything inappropriate, this is more to keep him away from the grumpy resident terrier than anything else.
Jesse loves to get pets, though he’s not insistent. He doesn’t jump up or counter-surf or get into any trouble. He occasionally grumbles if the resident hound sticks her long nose into his face, but just as a minor “go away you pest” sort of thing. Never having seen an Afghan hound before, his initial reaction to her was “what is that some sort of gray goat?” Jesse seems somewhat protective of his sister Emma, and takes the “fearless leader” role of the duo. Of the two, he’s more bold but all in all a gentle soul. His small size and happy attitude make him an easy houseguest. Whenever the dog brush comes out, he’ll do his best to wedge into the foster mom’s area to make sure he gets his share of grooming.
Toys don’t seem to interest Jesse, but he will dance around with his sister as well as the resident female in the morning “pet fest’” that usually ensues when the humans come down the stairs! During the day, he flops on a rug or bed and waits to see what’ll happen next. Jesse seems to like car rides, staying calmly where he’s put until he reaches his destination. Though he’ll stand in the wading pool to drink, he’s not yet shown too much love of water. No food aggression or jumping up for this polite lad; he has good leash manners as well.
Jesse and his sister would make a good pair if adopted together, but if he goes to a new home on his own, this boy would probably prefer to have a doggie sister. While he gets along fine with the resident male terrier, with both ignoring the other, eight years of having another dog friend seem to mean a lot to him.
Consider bringing both Jesse and Emma into your family! Twice the fun and twice the love!
