When having a puppy and young child became too much, the Pennsylvania owner made the hard decision to give Jerry to MAESSR to find him a new home. Jerry was much loved and well taken care of in his old home, and it shows. He is sweet, trusting, playful, and very loving, a real sweetheart. He is a big boy (now 44 lbs.) and is likely to be a big Springer. He has a gorgeous soft coat and he wags his whole back when excited and happy. He especially enjoys playing with a ball, stuffed toys, and a Frisbee.
Housetraining has been going rather well with Jerry having had just a few accidents. This important training should be easy to complete. Crated during the day for four hours at a time, Jerry is very happy to see his foster dad at lunch and after work. He settles in for the night and sleeps soundly until morning with no problems. He has full freedom of the house when not using the crate.
In his foster home, Jerry is living with eight other dogs of various ages and has adjusted very well to pack life. Still all puppy, he and one of his foster brothers love to wrestle and mouth one another’s faces. Just as he is good in his play, he is very good with people and dogs around his food bowl. Jerry likes to carry around shoes and really likes the soles of UGG shoes so his forever family will have to be careful about where shoes are kept. In his previous home, Jerry lived with cats that he would chase in attempt to play with them.
His foster family is helping Jerry learn proper Springer manners like not jumping up or chewing on people. He has taken a few walks with his foster family and after pulling for a few minutes, he settles into a nice pace. He sometimes knows the commands “sit,” “down,” and “no,” but these need some reinforcement. MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs under 1 year old to enroll their puppy in obedience classes within 60 days of adoption.
Like most Springers, Jerry wants to be close to his humans and wants to sleep in bed with the other dogs. Your typical Velcro Springer boy, Jerry is usually not more than a few steps from his person, anticipating his every move and sometimes getting underfoot. Jerry loves children but in his puppy exuberance, he may knock little ones down trying to say hello. With training and time, this should improve. He is very good about riding in the car but sometimes likes to climb into the front seat to help drive.
Since he loves to play, he would do very well if his forever family has another dog who shares his enthusiasm for playtime or someone home during the day to play with him. Jerry will be a great addition to the family that has the time and dedication to training him and loving him!
