Jerry is a very sweet 18 month old Springer who loves to cuddle. He came to MAESSR through no fault of his own. When his Delaware daddy became ill, the family felt Jerry and his brother, Ben, would be too much for their owner to handle when he returned home. Each brother was settled into a separate foster home to begin adjusting to life without the other. So far, they’re doing great!
In typical Springer fashion Jerry loves to play and run. There are two teen boys in Jerry’s foster family, one ESS and the family’s cats. Jerry has learned to be very respectful of the cats, who want to play and rub up against him like they do the resident Springer. If the cats stand their ground, Jerry will not chase. When the resident Siamese jumps out from behind furniture to say “Boo!” to Jerry, he takes notice. If the cat runs, Jerry will start to chase but, much to his credit, he stops immediately when his foster mom calls him. When out on walks, Jerry doesn’t try to pursue any cats he sees along the way. Some mornings, his foster mom has gotten up to find Jerry, the family Springer and one of the cats taking up most of the bed. Good Jerry! If properly introduced to a dog-friendly cat, Jerry’s foster mom thinks he would do fine with felines in an adopting home.
Jerry has no problem with being handled. The older teen in his home picks him up and carries him around. Jerry doesn’t mind this one bit. It just gets him closer to his face for a kiss! Both boys have played with his paws and ruffled his ears. His foster mom has pried open his mouth to get at a pencil Jerry didn’t want to part with. Jerry was very happy to see the neighbor’s teens who came to let him out one day and behaved very well for them. He does bark at smaller children in adjoining yards when they run and scream, but his foster mom thinks he wants their attention. He barks at older folks living on either side of his home until they reach over the fence for an ear scratching session. In his foster mom’s words, Jerry barks a good story as he runs away from the door. He’s 54 pounds of mush…… :)).
This goofy boy is housebroken. He crates easily but has been known to “break out” if left alone too long, even with the family Springer in a crate nearby. Left with plenty of toys and a rawhide, he has proven well behaved when fenced in the kitchen for the day. Jerry has only counter-surfed twice and got down immediately when caught. It seems there are just too many Springer-worthy smells in that kitchen at times! This young boy does not beg at the table. Rather, he sleeps underfoot through meals but is up in an instant for handouts. Jerry does not guard his food or toys and shares well.
When out with the boys or his foster dad on leash, Jerry does pull. With his foster mom, he is very good, and keeps looking back as if to see where she’s going next. Jerry did well at the groomers and fine with a home bath in the walk-in shower. He rides very well in the car and was well-behaved at the vet. Jerry knows a few commands………sit, down, wait……and does not try to bolt out the front door.
Jerry has shown a fondness for rolls of toilet paper and will carry them around until you play chase. Anything he isn’t supposed to have he gives up quickly when told to “drop it.” He likes soft toys to unstuff, tennis balls, digging (he likes to help), teenagers, the cats, other dogs, cardboard, walks, being under-foot, and giving kisses. This youngster would make a great addition to any family but would definitely like a playmate, either canine or human or both. What makes him happiest is having someone to keep him busy with light-hearted activities. If you have energy to match his and want a smile-inducing dog, look no farther than Jerry!!
