Update 05/29/11:
All great news for this handsome boy!! Jerry is settling into his foster home well. He has been good with everyone’s kids, both male and female resident dogs, and the cat! He is now free to roam in the house 100% of the time. Because he has bonded quickly to his family, he is also trusted off leash at times when outside.
Jerry is proving to be super responsive and affectionate. He has one more visit to his vet coming up and expects to be looking for his special family shortly after that. Such a fantastic and well-rounded boy – it won’t take him long to be charming his way into a forever home!!!
Original:
Jerry is a drop-dead gorgeous bench-bred ESS who was relinquished to a New York shelter along with his brother. Their owner found he did not have the necessary time to devote to the boys. Jerry may be eight years old but someone forgot to tell him! He still acts and looks like a very healthy three year old Springer! He did test positive for Lyme disease and, although he does not show any signs of illness, he is currently undergoing treatment.
This Velcro boy loves to lounge on the sofa and sleep in bed. He is perfectly housebroken and well crate-trained. Jerry has put his paws up to check the counter but, after seeing there was nothing interesting, he has not done it again. He does not beg for food or trash pick and, overall, has great house manners. He is great for grooming, even nail trimming and ear cleaning. Jerry only balked when the clippers were used near his face. Fortunately, this is nothing that repeated exposure shouldn’t cure. Jerry also loves getting his beautiful coat brushed and will roll over in happiness.
Jerry gets along well with dogs, cats, and kids of all ages. He does gently jump up for hugs. Normally this is not allowed but, since it is done so endearingly, his foster mom has allowed it. Jerry is very submissive to humans. However, he can be slightly dominant with other male dogs, particularly if there are toys or bones around. For ideal harmony in his forever home, Jerry would do best if any other dogs are female. Jerry is very responsive and playful. He loves walks and car rides, too. He walks well on leash but will pull when he sees a squirrel. He does respond to verbal correction. Jerry knows sit, down, come, paw, and up (for hugs).
This handsome guy would make a great family dog, especially if he had a female dog to keep him company when his people are away. Although he does not have separation anxiety, he does worry a little bit when he is left alone. For this reason, his foster mom has been crating him when she is out of the house. That way, she comes home to a sleeping dog and no worries! Jerry has a nice moderate energy level and is a joy to have around. Consider adding this beautiful boy to your pack.
