Original: Jay C came into an eastern Pennsylvania shelter as the result of a divorce. Unfortunately, this was his second time there. Jay C’s relinquishing family adopted him from the same shelter two years ago. While Jay C was not happy about his situation, it didn’t take long for him to enamor the shelter staff and gain extra hours of freedom in the shelter office!
While not tested in his foster home, the shelter reported that Jay C is good with kids of all ages and cats. He is presently sharing his foster home with the resident two-year-old Springer, and they are getting along very well, but that’s not to say they don’t have occasional power struggles. Jay C would like to be boss but is willing to accept that his roommate was there first.
Jay C is a typical Springer wiggle-butt that has a great deal of energy and will need a family that can spend time with him. He is very excitable but does not jump up on people. He has not counter surfed since being in his foster home – he looks but hasn’t touched. He also hasn’t searched for goodies in the trash can. But, then again, it is behind closed doors! Jay C is simply not preoccupied with food. He is a grazer so, if his new family already has dogs, he may need to be taught to eat his food in one sitting.
He has gone on several walks with his foster brother. While Jay C pulls pretty hard at first, he settles down and walks nicely with a loose leash by the end. He keeps his nose to the ground and seems uninterested in the local squirrels and rabbits, much to his foster brother’s amazement! Jay C likes nothing more than having a toy to chew on. Initially that was all he wanted, but as time has gone by, he doesn’t seem to need the security quite as much. He will destroy stuffed animals, so his new family will need to make sure there aren’t too many around. While he destroyed several dog toys, he has yet to chew on anything inappropriate.
Jay C is not crate trained but is housebroken. He has been fine in his foster home but will jump on furniture if given the chance. He sleeps in the basement at night, with the TV tuned to the History Channel and a nightlight on, and will also stay there when no one is home. If his foster brother is home to keep an eye on him, they have free run of the house except the bedrooms. His brother has also taught him how to use the dog doors to go outside.
When Jay C arrived at his foster home, it was with a heavy load of mats that the vet removed. Fortunately, once clipped out, his ears were found to be in good shape. His tail was clipped out too as he has some skin irritation there, related in part to having been exposed to fleas. After a nice bath and a start on flea preventative, this should clear up quickly. He looks a little funny with a long pointer-like tail right now, but his flag will grow back in. More on Jay C soon.
