Original: “Jake embodies all the loveable sweetness of Springer Spaniel puppies.”
Handsome Jake became a MAESSR boy when his Pennsylvania owner required a knee replacement and was worried that he couldn’t keep up with Jake. Anyone familiar with Springers knows that taking care of a young pup requires two good knees!
At 10 months old, Jake is a 60 pound bundle of love and energy. He loves running and playing; sticks, balls, and stuffed animals are his toys of choice. Jake gets along well with the resident Springers in his foster home and is particularly smitten with his female foster sister. He shows his affection by showering her with presents in the form of sticks and stuffed animals. Such a loving, Velcro boy, Jake enjoys snuggling and receiving kisses from his foster mom and follows her everywhere. He will place his nose or the side of his face right up to her face waiting for kisses. Too cute!
Jake’s house manners are pretty good for a young guy. Aside from a quick sniff of the counter, there hasn’t been any counter-surfing…yet. The trash can has a lid, so it has been unchecked by Jake so far. Although he has been known to chew on sticks or to rip the stuffing out of a soft toy, there has been no inappropriate chewing. Jake enjoys sitting on the couch with his foster mom and is permitted to do so. He occasionally will join the pack on her bed if there’s room.
Crate trained, Jake sleeps there at night. He’s also crated if his family is gone for more than six hours. Jake is housetrained but does have an occasional accident if he waits too long to go out. He does signal by pacing and barking at the door when he really needs to go! His foster mom is certain that he will become accident-free as he gets older.
Jake was very good boy at the vet’s and was found to be in excellent health. He was a little excited and wanted to sniff everything! Although he hasn’t been to the groomer, Jake’s foster mom says he loves having his ears scratched and he doesn’t mind having his feet touched.
Jake rides well in the car. He was secured during his travels and just sat and looked around, sniffing the air. On a walk, Jake will pull a bit but eventually will settle down. With consistent leash work, this should improve.
At his foster home Jake hasn’t yet met children, but he gets very excited when he sees the neighbor kids come out. He wags his stubby tail so hard that his whole butt wiggles. Since he’s still an excitable pup, it would be best if Jake’s forever family had older children who wouldn’t be prone to getting knocked over by his exuberance.
Please note that MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs under one year old to enroll their puppy in obedience classes within 60 days of adoption.
Jake embodies all the loveable sweetness of Springer Spaniel puppies. He would do great with an active family, possibly with older children and/or another canine friend to play with. They don’t come any more awesome and loveable than Jake!
