Update 10/08/12:
Bloat is an acute medical emergency that any dog can face and every dog owner hopes never to see. It’s life-threatening and can kill in hours. Early intervention with the best of veterinary support doesn’t assure a good outcome. Despite the best of chances when Jake fell ill, he succumbed to bloat. Godspeed Jake and peace to his foster family for trying.

The bad economy does not just impact humans; it impacts their pets as well. Because of financial difficulties, Jake’s Pennsylvania owner could not afford medications that her senior Springer needed. When Jake’s health worsened, she contacted MAESSR knowing that her beloved Springer would get the health treatment he so badly needed and get a loving new family that would commit to maintaining his health.
Jake is one sweet boy who loves people……. especially children. In his former home, he grew up with five kids who are now teens. He is also good with other dogs, cats, rabbits, and even ferrets! Not having a strong prey drive, Jake doesn’t bother chasing outside critters. He is just a mellow guy who does not resource guard food or toys.
Housetrained and reliable, Jake was never crate trained nor does he need one. He has full reign of the house with no accidents. With lovely house manners, Jake does not chew inappropriately, jump up on people, or counter-surf. Although he will beg for food, he never grabs something from a plate or from a child’s hand. Jake rarely barks, except occasionally at passing bikers.
Although Jake has not had any formal obedience training, his former did train him with hand signals for “sit,” “come,” “stay,” and “down.” After pulling a bit at the start of a leash walk, Jake then settles down and walks next to his person. He is reportedly good off leash, too. Riding in the car is not his favorite activity, though. Jake has never gotten sick in the car, but he drools a lot!
Grooming Jake has not been a problem. He is good with a bath, good with the clippers, and good with ear cleaning and nail clipping. Jake was a well-behaved boy at the vet’s office, too, despite all of the testing he had done. The vet found that Jake has a yeast infection all over his body. His eyes and ears were infected too. So, meds for all of these conditions were prescribed. Luckily, he takes all of his medications without a fuss. Good boy, Jake! At his next visit to the vet’s office, Jake will get his vaccinations updated and will be tested for heartworm disease. After Jake’s health improves, he will get a much-needed dental treatment. The vet noted Jake had arthritis in his hind quarters but his foster mom said he can still do stairs going up and down.
When he was younger, Jake used to play with toys, but not so much now. Perhaps this will change once he starts feeling better. Right now, he enjoys going for walks, snoozing, and being around his people.
Watch for more on sweet Jake as his health continues to improve. Send healing thoughts his way!
