After their owner died, Jake and his kennel companion Rosie 4 found themselves in a Pennsylvania shelter since no one in the family could take them. The shelter staff quickly contacted MAESSR, so now these two Springers are in a foster home. They are glad to be living inside a home again and are showing much love and appreciation.
Everyone remarks what an incredibly handsome boy Jake is and within minutes they add, “What a sweet natured boy, too.” Jake just wants to please his people and enjoys being with them. He greets everyone–people and dogs alike– with a friendly smile! In his excitement to meet people, he sometimes jumps up but stops immediately when told as he’s eager to learn and please. When Jake was exposed to a two-year-old, he gently stood eye to eye with the toddler, sniffed the child, and then wiggled away to get attention from the parents. Good boy, Jake!
Although Jake is housebroken, he has had a few accidents during his first week in foster care, but only while left unattended in the house. His foster mom thinks some of this may have been marking or not being familiar with the new schedule of going out. Now, at night and when no one is home, Jake is either crated or gated into a small area in the house as he adjusts to the new routine and new environment. This has done the trick since he has been accident free since this change.
Needing a brush-up on some house manners, Jake will jump up on furniture but gets down immediately when told. He likes to nap and sleep on a rug or soft cushion so his forever home should have a dog bed, rug, or crate cushion ready for him. So far, his only counter-surfing incident has been pulling a loaf of bread off the edge of the counter. He did not eat it, but seemed to be curious about it.
Jake has had no formal obedience training but can “sit” when not too distracted by other dogs. He will learn manners and commands more quickly once he is away from his kennel companion who is a distracting force for him. He barks if she’s excited and barks; otherwise, he’s calm. Jake is quickly learning to “sit” when the leash is being clipped on or off and he is very good about not pulling when on leash walks. Besides loving walks, Jake is an excellent jogging partner who has a nice smooth gait. After exercising, if you sit on the ground, he’ll put his head on your shoulder and snuggle. Or, if you need to run errands in the car, Jake is a great passenger who enjoys going along for the ride. This mid-sized Springer boy has a graceful jump and fools people into thinking he’s half his age! Jake can be as active or laid back as you want. He likes to play tug-of-war and enjoys balls, stuffed animals, and plenty of snuggling!
This loveable Springer boy is great with grooming and being seen by the vet. During his examination and micro-chipping, Jake tried to sit in the vet’s lap on the floor! He never seemed to notice the needle or flinch at all. He just kept smiling and trying to snuggle with her! He is in good health with the current exception of ear infections. With daily ear cleaning and medicating, Jake’s ears are improving greatly. When his foster mom cleans his ears, Jake’s only goal is to snuggle and enjoy the attention. When he was at the shelter, the staff there groomed his coat short to remove matted fur. Overall, his coat is very soft and in great condition.
A totally sweet, loveable guy, Jake is looking forward to having his own forever family who will continue his training and give him the love, exercise, and human companionship he craves! He’s a gem!
