Update 02/28/11:
Jake continues to be a very easy foster and a wonderful, loving boy. After making his grand entrance to his foster home as a dirty, stinky boy, Jake has joyfully abandoned this lifestyle and now LOVES to be bathed and groomed! He does not mind at all having his feet trimmed or ears cleaned; he honestly loves the one-on-one attention he gets when it is his turn to be brushed and fussed over. This includes getting his teeth brushed and his nails trimmed. A good spa treatment is right on top of Jake’s to-do list!
This is one very smart boy! Jake knows basic commands: “sit,” “paw,” “down,” “off” and “stay.” Although his stay is not very long, he does know it.
Jake’s most favorite pastime is giving love! This Velcro boy is happy to curl up with anybody who will accept him, whether human, canine or, wait for it……even feline! Jake also thinks that his “job” is to make sure that all of the animals in the house are well groomed. He will go from one to the other and make sure that each has a clean face and clean ears. For this reason, Jake would probably be happiest in a furever home with another laid back canine. He wouldn’t be opposed to having a cat around, either.
Even after a bit of time in his foster home to get comfortable and let his true personality shine through, Jake remains solid with impeccable house manners and not an aggressive or mean bone in his body. This smart, loving, and CLEAN guy is a real keeper. Hmmmm……….wonder if he’d like to learn how to vacuum?

Sadly, Jake’s story is one that has become all too common lately. He turned up in a rural West Virginia shelter that was extremely overcrowded and on a very limited budget. Jake’s time at the shelter was coming to an end, but since Jake has such a wonderful temperament and is a young boy, the staff only thought it fair to give him a chance at a wonderful life. They contacted MAESSR and within just a few short days, Jake was living inside and loving life!
Jake is an extremely easy-going boy. He has had two vet visits and even though he was in a great deal of pain from his neuter on the first visit, he was still calm and did not complain about being poked and prodded. His second vet visit went just as well; he had his microchip implanted and never once whimpered. Jake loves to go in the car and rides very well, just looking out the window as if to say, “Where are we going now?” This big boy also walks nicely on leash; he sits patiently and waits while his foster mom puts it on and he does not pull.
This trustworthy boy has wonderful house manners. He does not counter-surf or trash pick, so his foster mom has given him free reign of the house at all times. In addition, Jake is fully housetrained and has been left alone for up to ten hours without any accidents. Jake does not jump up and will lie quietly and contently on the floor. He has not attempted to jump onto the furniture, despite seeing the resident dogs all over the couch – good boy, Jake! When Jake wants some love, he will just come over next to his foster mom and nudge her hand. If permitted, he will then give her a gazillion kisses!
For safety and healing reasons, Jake was crated the first week in his foster home. Although he had to be bribed with some peanut butter bread at first, he went into the crate and did not complain. This young boy has shown no aggression either. When the bratty resident dogs come to see if Jake is done with his meal, he will just step aside and let them finish whatever is in his bowl. There are some toys lying around his foster home, but Jake doesn’t play with them much; he would rather shred up paper towel rolls or enjoy a good chew on some rawhide.
Although he has not yet experienced the groomer as he is still healing from his neuter, Jake’s foster mom suspects that he is going to love baths as soon as he is able to get into the tub! She has already discovered that he does not mind having his nails trimmed or his ears cleaned. If only the resident dogs would learn from him!
Jake is currently residing with three resident dogs (two males and one female) as well as three resident cats and gets along great with all of them. Not once has Jake thought that the cats were just moving squeaky toys! Jake’s past with children is unknown, but because of his size, 55 pounds, he would probably do best with older children. There has not been a person yet that Jake has met and not liked. In fact, people are always asking his foster mom how such a wonderful boy ended up in a shelter.
Jake is a true gem. Any family lucky enough to adopt him will find their lives are so much more complete!
