Update 12/20/04:
Jake is settling in and playing well with the resident dogs and the son in his foster home. He is making progress on the housebreaking front too. He can go several days without incident, and, then have one. Sometimes Jake seems to forget to take care of business when he’s out. Or if he’s distracted, he’ll forget to go. He is being crated when his family leaves the house and at night without incident. He rarely barks when they leave him, and he waits patiently to be let out when they get home or in the morning. He has been left for up to four hours.
Jake started to sneeze a lot and his eyes were getting red. His previous owner said he sometimes had allergies, so his foster mom attributed this episode to an adjustment to indoor living and the new dust that he is getting exposed to now that he’s inside. With Benedryl to ease the symptoms, he has almost completely stopped sneezing and his eyes are no longer red.
Original:
Jake E. Boy, his registered name, is an owner-relinquishment. Jake was purchased as a puppy for the owner’s sister, who passed away six months later. Jake then went to live with his owner for the next seven years. Due to a change in circumstances, his owner is giving up her home, so Jake needs a new one. It has been a very difficult decision for Jake’s owner, but she only wants the best for him.
Jake is a gorgeous field-bred springer. His complete vet records and registration papers are with him. His grandfather and great-grandfather were field champions. Jake lived with two teenagers in his owner’s home and has been great with the six year old boy in his foster home. He is getting along with his 12- and 3- year old foster brothers, and is submissive towards them. He will tear up soft toys, so nylabones and solid toys work well for him. He wants to carry something in his mouth whenever he is moving. Jake is reported to be good with cats, but he does want to chase the resident rabbits in his foster home.
Jake had been an outside dog, so his foster family is teaching him about “indoor living.” Jake is learning quickly and is enjoying life as an inside dog. His biggest fear is that he will be put outside again. He has the freedom to go in and out when he wants, and, he has been taking himself outside to go potty. He is crated at night and when his family goes out. Jake will bark when first crated but soon settles down. When his family returns, he waits quietly to be let out.
So far, Jake has let his foster family do anything to him. He is turning out to be a “Velcro” dog, wanting to be with his people and to please them. Jake knows “sit,” “come,” and “paw.” He loves going out and will pull on his leash. His foster family has not tried him off-leash in the open, but he is responsive in the yard.
Jake loves to play fetch. This is great since he needs to lose weight and gain some muscle tone. Jake likes having a playmate, human or canine, and he has a lot of energy. While Jake is content to stretch out and relax while chores are being done or his family is watching TV, he is ready to roll when they head out the door. Jake has a lot of love to give and needs some new playmates to make his life complete. Could that be you?
