Update 12/07/2018: “He is the sweetest and silliest little guy who makes his foster family laugh at least two or three times a day with his cute little personality.”
Jackson is doing great!!! He is the sweetest and silliest little guy who makes his foster family laugh at least two or three times a day with his cute little personality. He is a very mellow fellow who at times will get a super burst of energy and play/chase his 2-year old Springer foster sister. He loves to steal the tennis ball from her since she beats him to it every time. His little legs just don’t go fast enough. LOL!!! He has just started playing with toys and will play tug and toy keep away with his human foster brother. He is friends with the other three dogs in the house, even Mr. Bossy.
Jackson has free range of the house when the family is not home as he seems stressed by the crate. Some days he is great – no messes. Other days (in the same amount of time) he is not able to wait to go outside. This weekend, his folks are going to try using an X-pen to confine him in the kitchen (no carpet) to see how he does with being able to move around within a small area. His bed will be there as well so fingers crossed that this works for him!!
His skin and ears are healing nicely although he does still have some issues on and off with both. He now receives ear drops only once a week, but unfortunately the scar tissue build up from previous infections will not go away. Poor guy!!! He is also down to a once a week bath with his medicated shampoo. He will start itching and licking when the time has come for another treatment. Foster mom just started to add coconut oil to his food, and that also seems to be helping.
Jackson has no toy or food guarding at all, but is still a work in progress with resource guarding of his twelve year old foster brother. He was doing great up until recently when he misinterpreted the boys’ play wrestling and gave the older one a “back off” nip. The family defused the situation and rewarded Jackson when he approached the boys calmly. They will continue to work helping Mr. J. become more comfortable in interpreting human play situations.
Meeting new people is another area of growth for this boy. He is still initially somewhat standoffish and will bark with the rest of the pack when new people come in the house. After everyone settles down, company is asked to just ignore him until he approaches them. He will eventually feel comfortable enough to walk over to them for butt rubs and recently shared a chair with a visitor.
So, this young fellow is still learning and making progress while enjoying other Springers and older children in his foster home. He still needs attention to his ears and skin and help with housetraining issues. But, through all the hustle and bustle of those needs, he remains a happy, mellow guy who is learning to like all people and take advantage of his play time.
Original: “A low key guy, Jackson prefers to be with his humans and he especially adores the 12 year old human in his foster family. Jackson follows him wherever he goes and sleeps in bed with him at night.”
Handsome Jackson was found as a stray in Pennsylvania and when no one claimed him at the shelter, staff members contacted MAESSR for help. Now he’s a MAESSR boy!
When Jackson arrived in his foster home, he had major infections in both ears. His foster family is working closely with their vet to clear this up. Even though he’s dealing with the pain from this ear infection, he is as sweet as sweet can be. He also has a skin infection which is beginning to heal with medication.
A low key guy, Jackson prefers to be with his humans and he especially adores the 12 year old human in his foster family. Jackson follows him wherever he goes and sleeps in bed with him at night. Jackson also gets along great with the three resident dogs in his foster home. He has not met any cats yet but since he doesn’t seem to have a high prey drive, he might be okay with a dog savvy cat in his forever home.
Although he is housetrained and crate trained, Jackson will bark while in the crate. Even though he doesn’t really give any signs he needs to go out, the whole pack is taken out regularly so Jackson just goes with the flow on their schedule. He has pretty much been the perfect house guest but will have accidents if not crated when his family is not at home. This good boy does not trash dive or counter-surf and he LOVES sleeping in bed with his human brother. Jackson really enjoys treats and takes them nicely. He has no issues with his food bowl and eats in the kitchen with the rest of the pack.
Jackson knows “sit” and is learning other commands from his foster family. He walks very well on a leash but will pull if he sees something or someone that he wants to see more closely. Jackson is trusted off leash in the yard and he stays close to his humans wherever they are. When it’s time for a car ride, Jackson hops right in and finds his spot to lie down and go to sleep. He is a very good passenger!
Although Jackson doesn’t play with toys yet, he does play with the resident two year old Springer at times. This Springer girl is an Energizer Bunny so Jackson may not be quite ready to deal with all of her exuberance yet. Maybe when his ears are feeling better, they will chase after each other and play more frequently.
Jackson has been displaying some protectiveness of his foster mom and of the twelve year old son. He grumbled at the oldest son when he approached the youngest who was sitting on a chair with Jackson. The youngest told Jackson “no” and got him off the chair. Then, the oldest son approached Jackson without any issue. Another instance of this protectiveness was displayed at the youngest son’s baseball game. Jackson was perfectly fine with all the kids that wanted to meet and pet him, but after the kids started their game, one of the baseball moms approached to meet and pet him and he lunged at her and tried to nip at her hand. She handled it well and his foster mom gave him a stern “no” and then she was able to pet him without any issues. His foster mom sees these incidents as Jackson being protective (and not aggressive) and he was fine after correction.
Jackson absolutely loves butt and belly rubs so the lunging was a surprise to his foster mom. In hindsight, she felt it was perhaps a little too soon to have him out and about– especially since he is dealing with his ear infection. Even with the painful ears, he will let his foster family handle them without any issues and he did well getting a bath. His next test will be nail clipping but his foster mom does not see him having any issues with that.
Jackson is an absolute sweetheart who is a little cautious of meeting new people; however, once he is comfortable with them, he wants to be petted and loved on. This moosh gives kisses when asked, too.
If you are looking for a very low key, sweet boy to hang out with, stay tuned for more about Jackson as his foster family learns more about this adorable guy.
