Original: Jack is a firecracker of a puppy (10 months) in every way. He is loud, and boisterous, and bangs into everything, and he is beautiful! His foster family consists of a 13 yr. old springer, 2 cats and 2 teenagers.
This is a puppy who has had no training at all and is in desperate need of it. He wants to please, but just does not know how. Obedience classes, immediately, with Jack are a must. He still jumps up on everybody and could easily frighten small children even though he means no harm. He is still a puppy and very “mouthy” with everything including your hand if you’re not careful. We are working full-time on breaking this habit and have made some progress. This dog has spent 20 hrs. a day in a crate and does not like to go into one but will get food and will complain for a few minutes then settle down. Unfortunately, the more time Jack spends in the crate the worst he becomes around the house, he just goes wild.
Jack is pretty much house broken (he has had 2 accidents since we brought him home) but all he does to tell you he needs to go out is to lay by the door, so if you’re not paying attention this can be a problem. He loves to play ball and frisbee but doesn’t want to give them back. He is good with other dogs, if a bit boisterous. He needs tons and tons of exercise and love. He has no concept of how to walk on a leash. He just pulls and pulls.
He likes to chase moving cats, but has learned some lessons about leaving them alone and is much better than before, now he just sits and barks at them. He is a great lover, he wants to be with you at all times (so what else is new) and he will make a great dog for a family that has lots of time to give for his training right away, this is not something that should wait any longer.
Jack is a young healthy male that is great with dogs and people. He needs obedience training and lots of exercise. He is still a bit too excited about cats to be trusted. We are not sure how he is with toddlers.
Jack has been moved because his foster family was going on vacation. His new foster mom works days, so we will get a chance to see when he is home along during the day.
Update:
From his new foster mom:
Jack has settled in at his new foster home. He is a sweet, beautiful boy and a typical bouncy Springer pup. Like any other dog, he does a few laps around the yard after a full workday in the crate, but then settles down to normal. He gives a wonderful greeting, wagging from shoulders to tail. He is a playful dog and can tug and fetch endlessly. He likes to play chase with the resident dog but doesn’t have the stamina yet to last long at full run. Jack came into rescue very fat and out of shape. Both foster families have worked hard to get his weight down and to get him into shape.
To put his negatives in a nutshell, before coming into rescue, Jack has never been taught that he cannot have or do whatever he wants whenever he wants it. He is learning though. He isn’t obnoxious about it; he just doesn’t know. He is mouthy and grabby, he stands up on the counter (usually just to see what you are doing), he’ll take interesting objects that are within reach (but not shoes, yet), and barges in wherever he wants. All of these can be addressed with training and patience. So far, he has learned to wait for food and is slowly learning that the command applies in other circumstances. He is making progress on not grabbing things and on releasing toys. Obedience training will help him with general manners by teaching him that there are rules and expected behaviors. He is a big chewer, but a constant supply of sterile bones and Nyla bones keeps his attention.
Jack fusses briefly when put in the crate for the day, but apparently quiets down. He sleeps in a crate in the bedroom without protest (except when he sees that other dog jump on the bed in the morning!). Toss in a treat and he enters the crate voluntarily.
Jack is an affectionate boy who likes to be near his people. He greets strangers enthusiastically. He gets along well with the other dog in the household. Although he tries to dominate her (she is fairly submissive), he backs off when she tells him. He sometimes barks at her to get her to play but doesn’t chew on her. They are frequently found wrestling, tugging, or chasing each other around the yard. He would be a great addition to an active family.
