Hunter was picked up wandering the streets in North Jersey and was taken to a shelter in Warren, NJ on April 11th. He is about 7-months-old and has just come to his foster home in Langhorne, Pa. on April 24th. He is adjusting very well to his new home and is used to the crate. He has a microchip is his ear and was originally purchased from a Shake a Paw and subsequently passed to a second owner. When Hunter ran away, these owners did not care to look for him.
We had a little problem with Hunter marking the first two days but given his past, we feel it was mostly nerves. He has no problem lasting all night in the crate without any accidents. The marking has decreased so that now he has the run of the living room and kitchen and has been responding to all the attention and love we have been giving him. He is a typical Springer puppy with an abundance of energy and enthusiasm and curiosity about everything.
He has obviously had little training in the past but is rapidly learning the basic commands. He has the propensity to counter surf and will eat anything in reach (a loaf of bread and two apples) but we are working to break him of that habit. He climbed onto our kitchen bench and right up onto our kitchen table and back down the other side before we even had time to tell him “NO.” He will do well with anyone who takes the time to train him. He is already responding to our commands once he is clear about what we want him to do.
He is happiest when someone is petting him, rough-housing with him or just plain paying his some attention. He loves to play tug-of war with the rope and absolutely loves to have something, preferably a ball, in his mouth. He loves to go on long walks to the park and is very curious about everything he sees. He definitely does not like crossing streets and being close to cars so we are sure he must have had several near misses while he was wandering on his own.
He recently went to the vet who gave him a clean bill of health. He weighs 47 lbs, is Heartworm negative and is in optimal shape for his age. He still has some growing to do. He has been brought up to date with his shots and is scheduled to be neutered in the middle of May. He is getting along well with our 6-year-old springer, doesn’t bark or chase the children next door to us, and has only seen the cats next door through the fence but he hasn’t given them much attention. He is a happy-go-lucky guy who just wants to be loved and cared for and who has lots of love to give to whoever is lucky enough to adopt him.
Update 5/30/03:
Hunter has been adopted!
