When Hunter’s owner in Maryland faced a work-related move, MAESSR was contacted. Though tearful to give him up, his owner felt confident that MAESSR would find a great home for this fine young dog.
Hunter seems to love everyone he meets. Although he hasn’t been introduced to children yet, the only concern might be his enthusiasm; small children could be knocked down inadvertently by this happy-go-lucky guy. Hunter will occasionally jump up in his excitement when greeting someone, which is being discouraged.
Hunter is good with female dogs. He has shown some posturing with some males on leash, but generally will go on his way if told to “leave it.” He’ll play and wrestle with the resident female canine and enjoys throwing toys in the air, which makes the humans laugh. Tug-of-war and keep away are games that Hunter enjoys, but he shows no resource guarding of any kind. When playing, he has a gentle mouth.
Totally housetrained, Hunter either sleeps in his crate or gated in the room with the resident female. Because he doesn’t love the resident male terrier, he’s gated away from the grumpy old guy when the humans are away. Generally a polite fellow, Hunter is learning that he’s not allowed to put his paws on the kitchen counter to look around. Reportedly he was allowed to watch TV on the sofa in his previous home, but he is kept off the furniture in his foster home. There’s no inappropriate chewing for this smart boy who knows the commands “sit,” roll over,” and “stay.”
Hunter likes hanging out in the fenced yard checking for chipmunks under the shrubs, but will generally come when called from the yard especially if the word “treat” is used. Due to his curiosity he needs to be watched at gates or given the “stay” command, since he might decide to explore outside of the yard. His foster family reports that Hunter recently slipped out to do a quick tour of the neighborhood, with the humans running after him trying to get him to come. After a five minute investigation, he returned to the gate and sat by it; his foster parents were greatly relieved and intend to be more cautious in the future.
Hunter is always up for a walk. He will pull a bit on leash, since there are so many wonderful smells in the world outside of the fence. A Gentle Leader helps with this. He used to jog with his former owner and has since jogged two miles while in his foster family’s care. Hunter loves to go for car rides, too.
Some of Hunter’s favorite things include belly rubs and getting his hair brushed. He doesn’t mind having his ears or paws checked and when the dog brush comes out, Hunter goes belly up! This sweetie is mellow indoors unless his foster family uses the voice that lets him know it’s time for petting! Hunter would actually rather get petted than eat dinner, but if told to “’go eat,” he’ll do so.
In his prior life, Hunter was reported to have anxiety at the vet and was muzzled for shots. When he recently went to get neutered, he had no issues. In fact, he charmed the staff to the point where everyone wanted to take him home.
Ideally Hunter would love a home with another female dog as a playmate and happy humans to take him for walks and lavish him with attention. This beautiful boy’s pictures don’t do him justice. He’s got a big Springer grin that’ll just charm anyone. Don’t miss the chance to share your home with handsome Hunter!
