Update 09/25/2013: “Hunter is so funny – he now hides his pink pig within the house.”
What great news for Hunter! Both ear infections have been successfully treated and his allergic skin reaction has cleared up. All medications have been discontinued, with the exception of daily supplements which benefit his joint health.
This soft, fluffy bundle of joy is ready for his forever family. While he sleeps much of the day, his personality comes out in spurts of energy. Now that he is feeling his best, he walks with a spring in his step, although he still seems to prefer a shorter, rather than longer, trek. He has shown great improvement in travelling to the second floor of the house, likely benefitting from the daily dose of joint supplement. Hunter still possesses that Springer nose, as he has explored the countertops when his foster mom has food or treats up there. He responds well, however, to a motion from his foster mom to get down. What a good boy!
Hunter is so funny – he now hides his pink pig within the house. Where will it turn up next? He barks occasionally: to greet another dog, to alert his mom that it’s dinnertime, and when he happens across an “object” that is new to him. For example, he barked at a baby-seat that a neighbor pulled out of her car and placed on the driveway. He also barked at a political sign that another neighbor recently put up on their lawn. He is one goofy and curious boy!
Are you ready to explore and enjoy life with this seasoned gentleman? Sweet Hunter will put a smile on your face!
Original: “The puppy in Hunter comes out when he plays with a certain soft toy called the Pink Pig. He will carry around the Pink Pig, bury it in the corner of the yard, and occasionally go back to visit it to make sure it’s still there.”
Hunter was relinquished to a New Jersey animal shelter when his owners moved into an apartment that didn’t allow dogs. He had been adopted from this same shelter when he was 7. The shelter asked MAESSR to find a home for this wonderful senior who was no longer used to kennel living.
This handsome boy was described as “easy going!”; “friendly!”; an “awesome dog,” and his foster mom can now attest to that 200%! This is one laid-back, beautiful Springer. He is quiet and unassuming and gives the best “thank you, Mom!” look at dinnertime.
Hunter has impressive house manners as well. He has not attempted counter-surfing, although he has an excellent nose and gets curious when something good is up on the counter. The kitchen trash is covered, and he has not tried to get into that. He makes himself at home on the sofa, but will get down when his foster mom motions for him to get off. He does not chew or bark inappropriately, nor does he guard toys or food.
This best boy is housetrained although he has not (yet) signaled to go out. He hasn’t been tested for a crate, because, being the gentleman he is, he is trustworthy in the house when mom is away for a short period of time, and, when she is at work for the whole day, he happily sleeps in his own bed in his own bedroom. At night, he sleeps in his own bed in the master bedroom next to his people.
Hunter acts as if he’s deaf, but every now and then he seems to heed a “no” or a “get down” command. His foster mom hasn’t figured out how to get him to “sit,” but he does come when she waves him to come along. He does need to be kept on a leash when outside since he has a tendency to explore and does not seem to have any recall skills. Hunter walks well on a leash and often stops to “smell the roses!” He does a cute Springer twirl when it’s walk time.
MAESSR’s new senior has a few favorite things in life, aside from his human companions. Car rides are a great treat! He’ll give a few “woof woof’s” in excitement at the prospect of “going for a ride!” He then quickly settles down in the back seat. And, he LOVES his soft toys! The puppy in him comes out when he plays with a certain soft toy called the Pink Pig. He will carry around the Pink Pig, bury it in the corner of the yard, and occasionally go back to visit it to make sure it’s still there. Hunter tried initially to engage the resident dog in play, but that dog had no interest, so now they simply coexist. Hunter is very simple: he loves to follow his foster mom, ride in the car, play with a soft toy, or sleep!
He was a perfect patient at the vet, and it wasn’t long before the doctor observed, “What a great dog!” Hunter let the doctor poke and prod him without a grumble and has easily accepted medicated baths which have alleviated his itchy skin condition and treatment for ear infections (of course they are followed by a yummy piece of chicken as a reward for his good behavior). All in all, he is beginning to shine!
This is one handsome, laid back gentleman. He’d love to take walks with you—will you stop and smell the roses with him? He will steal your heart!
