Update 06/21/12:
Hunter continues to be a happy youngster. Occasionally a little mouthy, this boy doesn’t nip or chew inappropriate things; he does tend to slobber on his foster folks though……:). Hunter is at the age where obedience training would teach him to focus. Mellow indoors, he loves to cuddle with his humans; sharing the love with other dogs is just fine too. He enjoys his meals and shows no aggression towards the resident dog when she tries to steal his food. Lest she be successful, Hunter is fed separately. He was pretty interested in cats when at the vet’s office, so he may need, at minimum, a dog-savvy cat. He loves to play fetch with stuffed animals.
At 29.6 pounds Hunter is healthy but thin. He could put on 5 more pounds and is working on it. His smaller size and love of car rides make him a great road trip buddy. At coffee shops, he is so friendly to strangers that when they find out he’s a foster dog, people want to know what they need to do to adopt him instantly. He doesn’t jump up; he just sits at their feet wagging and smiling.
Long-story-short on Hunter…………he just goes around grinning all the time he’s awake. He’s always up for a walk or is trying to figure out what the other dogs are carrying on about. While his foster mom is busy at the computer, he and the resident dog are typically flopped on the floor resting up and waiting for her to finish work. He’s like a bobble-headed goofball with this message: “I’m so happy to be around you.” Hunter’s brainy enough, but his prime directive is “grin for the humans, they deserve it!”
Hunter’s going to make someone a fine dog. Don’t miss the chance for that someone to be you!!!
Original:
Animal control officers found Hunter “loose in the road” in West Virginia and he was then taken to a shelter. When no one claimed him, wonderful MAESSR volunteers picked him up and brought him to his foster home by way of the Newville MAESSR picnic.
Estimated to be two years old, Hunter looks and acts younger, but is completely housetrained and can hold his water all night. He doesn’t yet lift his leg to pee and is submissive to the resident dogs. He loves to play with toys, but is fairly calm in the house unless he’s getting special attention, in which case he can be very playful. While prancing around with a stuffed animal in his mouth, Hunter makes little happy noises! He got the “back-off-buddy” nip from the resident Springer on his first day in foster, so is easing his way back into her good graces so he can play with her. He seems to enjoy the company of other dogs, but if his humans were around regularly, Hunter would probably be fine on his own.
This cute little one-time stray actually has good house manners. He doesn’t chew on inappropriate items, hasn’t tried to counter-surf or trash dive, and he does not have any separation anxiety when his foster parents leave the house. At his humans’ mealtime, he’ll initially think about begging, but will “go lie down” when told to do so. He also knows “sit,” loves car rides, and is getting better on a leash. Currently, he doesn’t get on furniture. At night, Hunter quietly sleeps in a crate, but is left uncrated during the day whenever his humans are away. His barking seems to be confined to joining the resident dogs if they’re barking at the mailman.
An easy foster, Hunter always has a twinkle in his eyes and a Springer grin on his face, and will soon be ready to make some new person or family a wonderful dog.
