Original: Hugh came to MAESSR from a shelter in New Jersey. He was surrendered to the shelter because his owner moved and chose not to take him along. Hugh is a striking springer with his gorgeous coat and full tail. Since he spent his whole life as an outside dog, he needs to learn the basics of being an inside dog. In many ways, he is a five-year-old puppy! When he first came to his foster home, he did not know what a squeaky toy was and he is now just getting used to being a house dog.
Hugh is a sweetheart and very smart. When on his walks, he pulls slightly while on a leash and his nose is to the ground. He will go out of his way to walk in a puddle! Hugh is not completely housebroken, but he already knows not to go in the house. Next, he needs to learn to tell someone when he needs to go out. He is also in the process of being crate trained by his foster parents.
Hugh has no bad habits. He does not beg for food nor counter-surf. He does not try to jump on the furniture nor the bed or people, for that matter. Hugh has yet to bark in his foster home. He loves to go for walks in the woods and has had the opportunity to play in a small stream. He loves to ride in cars, too.
In his foster home, Hugh loves the neighbor’s female mixed breed dog, but he does not like his foster grandmother’s male toy poodle. As with any dog, Hugh can get a little carried away when playing with toys. His eagerness to “get the toy” could be mistaken for aggression, but it is only play enthusiasm!
He handily passed his temperament test that had been administered by the shelter. He likes people and shows no reaction to a raised hand or human aggression. He doesn’t show any negative reaction to being touched anywhere on his body except he doesn’t care to have his tail pulled.
Will this sweetheart be your Valentine? You and Hugh could make the perfect pair
