Huey was relinquished to MAESSR when his retired owners from Maryland determined he was just too much too for them to handle. He loved the husband and would obey him; however, he would occasionally grumble at the wife when she was trying to get him to do something he did not want to do. Although he never bit anyone, his owners felt he should move to MAESSR where he could be worked with to help him overcome some of his bossiness.
MAESSR will be requiring the family that adopts Huey to take him through two series of obedience classes to ensure he has all of the tools to continue being a good boy.
Huey was started on an inexpensive anxiety medication when he came into foster care. This has helped him calm down enough to focus on being a sweetheart. The adopting family will be required to keep him on this medication for a minimum of three months after adoption to give him plenty of time to adjust to his new home.
This sable youngster is housetrained but when he came into MAESSR’s care, he was not crate trained. Initially when crated, he would drool and try to escape. Now, he will run and get in his crate when his foster mom says, “If you want a cookie, then go get in your crate.” Ah, there’s nothing like positive reinforcement for training and for Huey the best reinforcement seems to be food! He sleeps quietly all night in the crate, too. When his foster parents are eating their meals, Huey does beg for food and will occasionally counter-surf.
Huey is wonderful with people that he meets on his walks, ages 12 to adults. He walks well on the leash and he can be trusted off leash. He will go a little way from his people but always checks back in. Good boy! On leash walks he is good meeting other dogs, too. He is currently living with many other dogs in his foster home and he loves to run, wrestle, and play with them. He’s always ready for a good swim in the pond to cool down after all that play!.
When he arrived at his foster home, Huey was not completely comfortable riding in the car, but has made a lot of improvement. With a little more practice, he should be a real road warrior.
Huey’s perfect family would one with plenty of energy to give this boy the exercise he needs, the time needed to work with him and reinforce being a good boy, and lots of love and cuddles.
