Original: “Hudson is a happy guy who is looking forward to his own home.“
Hudson and his litter mate, Grace, were relinquished to a New York shelter when their elderly owners found the lively, young pair too much to handle. The shelter asked MAESSR for help.
Hudson had a rough start which has left him needing socialization with people and other dogs. He is a sweet fellow who is never mean, but can be reactive toward the unknown such as people and dogs met on walks or in stores. He becomes very worried that something is going to happen to him and reacts by being defensive but is not aggressive. He can be distracted from this behavior with food. He would not break loose and attack another dog. He just needs time to warm up.
MAESSR will require his adoptive family to take him through two series of obedience classes within 90 days of adoption. Hudson quite possibly experienced some harsh training methods before coming into MAESSR’s care, and the obedience classes for him must emphasize positive reinforcement and force/free training to help him be more comfortable with other dogs and to become the best little Springer boy he can be. MAESSR only places puppies – even older ones – in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience. MAESSR believes the decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment.
This handsome boy is housetrained and crate trained. The crate is used for sleeping and to restrain his mischievous spirit when foster mom cannot be watching him. Hudson knows “sit,” and is working on “come,” “down,” and “stay.” He does pull when walking on the leash, but is also learning how to walk politely with the help of a gentle leader. His foster mom does not give him the opportunity to counter-surf, but probably he would do so if he could!! He does tend to be a gobbler so a slow feed bowl is recommended for him.
He was good while being groomed–brushing, clipping and nail grinding–and rides well crated in the car.
Hudson is a happy guy who is looking forward to his own home. He might like a cat friend, but might be best as an only dog. He needs further training with an experienced family who knows that a little love, understanding and training to build his confidence, security and trust in people will go a long way toward helping this sweet pup become a positive addition to a Springer-loving family.
