His full name is Sir Thurmont Huckleberry — better known as Huck — was born in August 1996 in Lebanon, PA. His family purchased him in October 1996. For the first year of his life, he lived inside with the owners and was housebroken. After that, he now lives outside in a barn/shed and sleeps in a crate. He has a lot of energy loves to go on walks.
Huck loves people and will do anything to please his owners. He’s very good around children but his energy tends to sometimes to scare small kids. The owners are moving and cannot take him with them. He’s a beautiful and healthy dog.
His family doesn’t know if he’s housebroken any longer. When they moved to this house, they put him outside to live. It’s not clear if he comes into their home at all. However, most dogs that have been housebroken before – only take a few reminders to get back in gear.
Huck is good with older children. He might overwhelm young children as when he gets excited he jumps on you. He’s never been around cats. He doesn’t bark any more than any other Springer, doesn’t chew but is a digger. He’s friendly to other dogs in their neighborhood. There are really no other temperament problems.
Huck weighs about 50 pounds and is a happy dog who wants to please. He hasn’t had any obedience – and could surely use a class – but does understand “sit” and “heel”. He walks well on a leash, but if he sees a rabbit or other small creature, will pull you along. He’s very strong.
This family is moving about the 24th of February and cannot keep him after the 22 or 23. He needs a home – now!
Update:
Lucky for Huck a foster home opened up that could take him. Here is his foster mom’s update:
I picked up Huck from his owners last night. He is huge. He is very heavy and has a whole lot of hair. I would estimate him to weight at least 70 pounds. He kind of looks like a little St. Bernard. At first he wouldn’t come to us. He is very head shy. He took to my son at first but has now bonded to me. He seems afraid.
Huck has shown no aggression to us, however he and my 16-month-old old ESS Chips don’t see eye to eye. Chips is a little over eager trying to be friendly and Huck growls at him. We sent Huck to his crate. I am taking him outside regularly. He has had one accident, peeing on the floor. He likes his crate. He needs some manners, if the trash can is out he will get into it. I was cleaning his crate and he got one of the paper towels. I was able to take it right out of his mouth with no problem.
Huck seems like a nice dog that needs some attention and loving.
Update:
Huck is a lot less socialized than we thought that he was. He will need time in his foster home to learn not to be so frightened and worried. When he has come out of his shell and is feeling more comfortable, we will look for a home for him. For now, Huck will stay where he is and learn to trust.
