Original: Honey was taken to a shelter in central Maryland after a puppy mill raid that yielded 39 dogs, four of them springers. Honey did well with the other dogs but was very shy around people and would go to the back of her kennel when people came to visit. She was also a very poor walker on the leash.
Once in her foster home, Honey began making tremendous progress. She is now very comfortable with the adults and older children, ages 20 and 16, in her foster home but remains shy around the 11-year-old in the home and people coming to visit. Her foster family feels this is something that will come around as she gains confidence in herself. Her leash manners have also improved. She can now walk without getting under the human’s feet.
Honey is very smart and is picking up commands quickly. She responds to her name, knows “sit,” “down” and is learning “come.” She also knows where the tennis balls and other toys are stored. She is almost housebroken and has only had a few accidents in the house. She is crate trained and spends her time napping in her crate when her family is not home.
She enjoys playing with tennis balls and will carry a tennis ball or a stick in her mouth when she goes for walks. Honey and her springer foster brother like chasing each other in the yard, but she likes to keep her people in sight. She also likes to steal shoes and slippers and eat dryer sheets and rubber bands. Her foster parents are teaching her that these are not proper puppy food.
Honey is a petite girl, weighing only 27 pounds, but still manages to put her paws on the counters to get a better view of what’s up there. Her foster parents are teaching her that such viewing is not acceptable for a springer puppy either.
Honey is appropriately named. Make this honey of a puppy yours!
