Original: Hershey’s owners could no longer keep him and turned him over to a local rescue group in northern West Virginia. That group contacted MAESSR, and shortly after that, Hershey moved to his foster home.
Hershey is a beautiful boy who will be even more handsome after he gains a few pounds. Living inside appears to be a new experience for him, and he isn’t sure what to make of stairs and air vents. His foster family has not run the vacuum cleaner yet, but that is sure to be a scary event for this boy. Hershey is very cautious of all the new things around him.
Hershey appears to be hard of hearing, or perhaps was exposed to so much noise that he just doesn’t respond to most sounds. He doesn’t know his name or any commands at this time. He hasn’t been leash-trained and pulls like a freight train. His foster family will begin working with him on the basics. Hershey gets along great with his foster brothers and just loves the resident 8-year-old boy. Hershey accepts being crated at night and when his foster family is not at home.
Hershey has picked up a bone but hasn’t actually chewed one yet. He also won’t take dog biscuits, but he does like cheese. Hershey needs to learn the manners that go with his new lifestyle. Currently, he is marking and doing some counter-surfing. He has figured out the doggy-door already though, so his foster family is sure he will figure out the rest of the rules with time, patience, and some consistent guidance.
More on Hershey as he settles in and visits the vet.
