Update 03/12/2018: “This is one precious little boy. Happy and joyful, Scooter is just waiting to make his own special person very happy to have such a wonderful companion!”
Scooter continues to charm his foster family and be the best houseguest possible. Recently he met a couple of children who were visiting him home and he did really, really well with them. Although he didn’t come to them, he sat with the 10 year old girl and ate up the attention she gave him for a good half hour. He then came into the room a little later to see where she was! Good boy, Scooter…you definitely know a good thing when you see it!
Every day, Scooter becomes more and more his own man. He’s now walking on the leash almost every day with great joy. Although he doesn’t “sit,” he has learned “stay,” “come,” and “go lie down.”
This is one precious little boy. Happy and joyful, Scooter is just waiting to make his own special person very happy to have such a wonderful companion!
Update 02/01/2018: “He is starting to carry some toys around and will help the puppy in his foster home take them outside. Silly dogs!”
Scooter is doing well these days, enjoying his walks and playing with the other foster dogs. He has become quite the social butterfly with his family and is much more at ease with new people. Scooter now comes around for loving, brushing, or petting. He is not up to cuddling yet, but he’s thinking about it!
Although he continues to have his shy times, his foster mom feels all that Scooter really needs at this point is to get out in the world and experience life. He is starting to carry some toys around and will help the puppy in his foster home take them outside. Silly dogs!
Scooter would love to have a person of his very own. Do you have the time to make friends with this sweet little boy? If so, you will be in for hours of pleasure and fun.
Update 12/20/2017: “He would love to have a big brother or sister who is confident and secure to take the lead and show him what the world is all about.”
Scooter continues to be a bundle of joy to his foster family and now his little curly tail is in constant motion. Recently his medications were changed which has helped a great deal with his shyness. He now interacts with his foster family on his own and comes to them for attention when everything gets quiet.
He is starting to understand the command “come” but, at this point, he responds mostly when it suits him or there is a treat involved. Funny boy! Scooter loves the little foster girl, who is about his size, and they play together all the time. He would love to have a big brother or sister who is confident and secure to take the lead and show him what the world is all about.
Scooter is a very gentle, low energy pup and is happy to lie at his foster mom’s feet as she works on the computer. If you’re looking for a foot warmer for the winter, we have one for you!
Update 11/19/2017: “He is the perfect house dog, never getting into anything he shouldn’t, and he can be trusted with full run of the house when there is no one home.”
Scooter continues to come into his own daily, although he’s still a little shy with new people. He has become a playful, happy boy. Although he doesn’t go to the door when visitors arrive, he does protect the property from other things going on in his world. Recently people came to harvest the soy beans fields and Scooter spent all day outside, running around to chase away the really big equipment from his yard. Good job, Scooter!
He is beginning to enjoy his walks on the leash, although he still takes a few minutes to approach something entirely new. Little by little he is finding his way into the world.
This sweet boy would do well being a companion for another dog that likes to run and play. He is the perfect house dog, never getting into anything he shouldn’t, and he can be trusted with full run of the house when there is no one home.
In the morning, when Scooter’s foster mom comes out of the bedroom, he will run circles around her and then drop down at her feet to get his morning loving. Although he does not follow her around the house during the day, he does enjoy his cuddle time and is very affectionate. Recently he has shown some interest in getting up on the sofa; but so far it is only interest, as he is not a jumper.
Scooter’s heartworm treatment is going well and he has finished the treatment for hookworms. His foster mom believes that he will be ready for adoption very soon as long as the adopter understands he will need a little time to adjust to new people. His foster family just loves this sweet little boy and wants so much for him to have a home of his own. If you have the time to make friends with this cute boy, you will have a friend for life!
Original: “Herman, or Scooter, as he is called in his foster home, is housetrained and has excellent house manners.”
Herman came to MAESSR from a rescue group in Alabama that was having trouble finding a foster home for him. He was a stray that had no doubt lived outside his entire life and was not well socialized. This poor boy experienced hard times in his short life. MAESSR was up for the challenge to help Herman have the kind of life he deserves.
It has taken some time, but this cute boy has begun to adjust to living with humans. He’s discovering that life is full of good things, great toys, and even other dogs that will play with him. He is loving and playful with his foster family although still a little shy with strangers. He met some children early on and was frightened because he was just not ready for that interaction. He now seems ready to begin to go places and to be introduced to a bigger world as leash training progresses. Recently Herman went to the vet for some updates on vaccines and was fairly relaxed, getting along quite well with the staff and his transporter. His foster family feels that he will be ready to meet and greet the world in a short amount of time with a little more work and encouragement.
Currently Herman is receiving treatment for hookworms. He also has been receiving treatment for heartworms using the “slow-kill” method of treatment which is going well. This involves giving the infected dog monthly Heartgard tabs over the course of a year. (Doxycycline therapy is sometimes done as part of the treatment as well.) At the end of the year the dog is retested for heartworms. MAESSR will supply medication to the adoptive family and will pay for the follow-up vet visit and heartworm test. Although most dogs are heartworm-free after one year, MAESSR will pay for the treatment if the dog is still heartworm positive.
Herman, or Scooter, as he is called in his foster home, is housetrained and has excellent house manners. There has been no trash-diving, counter-surfing, or getting into anything inappropriate. What a good boy! He will play with toys to entertain himself, and he loves to play with other dogs. This sweet guy loves to be petted and groomed. His foster mom can touch him all over without any problems. For a dog with Herman’s background, human attention is undoubtedly a delight! Although not much of a cuddler, Herman loves to just lie under his foster mom’s feet while she is working at the computer; when she is finished he will retreat to a dog bed.
Watch for more news on this cute boy as he continues to discover all the wonderful things that his new life has to offer.
