Updated 8/27/07: Hemi is doing absolutely WONDERFUL with foster life. He joined his foster family for his first trip to the beach (well, at least they think it was) which was hysterical. According to his previous family, Hemi loved the water. Well, not salt water, at least. He was actually scared of it and couldn’t swim!! His family worked with him a bit while there and by the end of the week, he was running through the shallow waves! Yeah!!!! They’ll get to work more with him when they can take him out on a boat. Something else they’ll be working on is his ease while traveling. Hemi’s proving to be a very nervous rider in the car and doesn’t sit still until almost 2-3 hours into a trip. With a few more road trips and trips around town, it’s hoped that Hemi will become a savvy traveler who snoozes while his people drive him to the next adventure.
With neutering and his physical behind him, Hemi has a clean bill of health. His foster family is not sure who is spoiling who while he is with them. Hemi is willing to try new things and is quite entertaining as he learns. He will easily fit into life with active people who include their dog in lots of outdoor recreation!
Original: Hemi’s family was moving and could not take him with them so they brought him to the shelter in Altoona, PA. A MAESSR shelter liaison found him there and now he is in foster care.
Hemi loves people of all ages! When he was visited by prospective adopters in the shelter, Hemi allowed himself to be walked on a leash by a young child without his pulling. However, when adults walk him, Hemi pulls like crazy! Go figure. His foster mom is working with Hemi to improve his leash manners with everyone.
Although not aggressive with cats, Hemi has a tendency to play rough and the resident cat had to show him who was boss in the house. Hemi is accepting this feline dominance in the household pecking order. Running around the yard with the resident kids and the resident Springer is one of Hemi’s favorite activities only to be topped by playing with ice cubes. Hemi could care less about people food, but let an ice cube drop to the floor and he’s on top of it! If wagon rides are being offered, Hemi would be glad to come along if he can sit on someone’s lap. He is equally good as a passenger in the car.
In the house, Hemi is not a counter-surfer or a trash diver. He is completely housetrained and sleeps in his foster parents’ bedroom with the resident beagle. Unfortunately, he does not like the crate and refuses even to check it out. Hemi is a quick learner according to his foster mom and he has learned to “sit” and “shake hands” in no time! His foster family is helping him learn all the other commands as well.
This striking field bred Springer boy would love an active family of which he could be an integral part. How about it?
