Original: “Whoever adopts Heidi will need a ‘Dog can’t hold its ‘licker’ welcome mat.”
Heidi was turned into a shelter in western Pennsylvania when her elderly owner became too frail to care for her. This lucky lady found her way to a caring MAESSR foster home.
At six years old, Heidi is a diamond in the rough…a very sweet dog who does not have a mean bone in her body, but who has no manners. Reportedly she spent a good deal of time outside and therefore has not yet learned how to be the best that she can be. She does have some submissive urination but is making progress on learning what this housetraining thing is all about. Heidi is also learning about crate training; she follows a treat into her crate at night or when her foster mom is at work and settles down after a little while.
Although she will happily chew on appropriate items such as bones or antlers and play with plush toys, Heidi will also get into everything…furniture, laundry, shoes, litter boxes, trash—she ripped open bags outside! She is VERY mouthy and licks… hands, feet, legs, back, and even hair when her foster mom bends over. Whoever adopts Heidi will need a “Dog can’t hold its ‘licker’” welcome mat! She will jump and grab at her person’s hand if she even thinks it contains a treat or anything of interest–she’s not mean, but just wants to get to whatever it is first. Heidi knows “sit,” but lacks the self control for “stay.” However, to give this beautiful young lady credit, she does not seem to jump on people and behaved herself at the vet’s and groomer’s.
Outside, Heidi loves to play ball but pulls on her leash when walking—manners, manners, manners. She loves the recently arrived snow and thoroughly enjoys her canine and feline foster siblings even if they don’t always want to play as much as she does.
MAESSR’s lovely Heidi needs a home that can give her a good amount of structure (along with the belly rubs she loves!) as she learns the ways of an inside dog. A home with young children might not be best for this gal who is still quite mouthy and grabby. Even though she’s approaching middle age, obedience school might be a fun experience for her and a way for her to bond with her new family and they with her. She should quickly learn to sparkle like the true diamond she is!
