Update 08/04/08:
Hansel continues to do well in his foster home. With a little more time to get acquainted, more is known about this handsome boy. His foster family has found that Hansel doesn’t like to be crated unless you drive off. He will protest vocally if he is left crated while others go out to play. Hansel loves attention and would probably prefer a canine companion. He seems to be a middle of the pack guy – not alpha. He is very tolerant of alphas, but he is not totally submissive at all times either. He will eventually react if an alpha is obnoxious, but Hansel protests by grumbling and trying to remove himself from the situation.
Hansel is ready for the attention of his very own forever family. It shouldn’t take long for him to find someone to love him as much as he will love them!!
Original:
Hansel and his sister Gretel were relinquished to MAESSR due to the ill health of their owner. They were wonderful companions to the owner’s husband in the final months of his life.
Hansel is a very smart boy, having figured out the doggy door at his foster home extremely quickly. Hansel knows some commands and is both crate-trained and housebroken. When his foster family leaves the house, Hansel is crated. He was originally also crated at night, but has already graduated to spending the night uncrated. Hansel does not garbage-pick and has only occasionally surveyed the counters tops. He wants to be up on furniture, but respects a stern “no” or “off.” When out on a walk, Hansel pulls on the leash, but respects a prong collar. He has not been off-leash. In the car he does fine. Hansel was an angel at the vets’ office too, impressing them with his excellent behavior.
Hansel gets along well with his canine foster sister and brothers and with the resident ten-year-old human. In recent months, he spent a lot of time crated and has gained a few extra pounds. His foster home is working on getting him back into shape. That won’t be hard to do with the people and dogs willing to play with him. He has not shown any interest in toys, though. Hansel is reported to jump a three-foot fence, but he respects the four-foot fence at his foster home. Why would he want to go outside the yard anyway? He loves the attention he gets from his foster family! Hansel does seem to be more male-oriented, although he is an equal-opportunity attention getter. As he has settled in to his foster home, he is becoming more and more vocal.
More will follow on Hansel as he settles into his foster home.
