When his Virginia family did not have adequate time to care for an active Springer, they contacted MAESSR to find Hank a new home.
This very lovable cuddle bug of a Springer is 51 pounds of “happy to see you!” Hank loves new people of all ages and sizes. He comes from a home where he lived with children ages 2 and 4. He also got along great with the neighborhood kids ages 12-17. Hank enjoys other dogs and plays very well with the nine-month-old female Springer foster. He spends a lot of time watching out for birds, rabbits, squirrels, and cats. This high energy guy can be a bit enthusiastic with his barking when he sees one of these critters.
Housetrained, Hank has not had an accident indoors and barks or whines to signal his need to go out. He has been a good boy about not counter-surfing or bothering the kitchen trash can. He does not attempt to get up on the furniture. During his foster family’s mealtime, Hank can be found snoozing under their feet at the dinner table; he’s not a beggar! Hank is crated while his foster parents are at work. He barks at first but then settles down. He has been fed in his crate to re-enforce that it is a preferred place to hang out. Hank has been sleeping in his foster parents’ bedroom on his dog bed. Or rather, he starts out there and sneaks into the people bed sometime during the night. He is a cuddly guy but will get down when told.
Besides playing with the resident Springer, Hank enjoys frequent dips in the kiddie pool or lake, especially on a hot day! He also loves going for walks and runs with his foster parents who have found that Hank walks best on a gentle leader as his enthusiasm shows in the way he pulls on a regular leash. Hank has learned the commands “sit,” “come”, “down,” and “paw” and is very food-oriented in his training. A piece of meat or some peanut butter will get him doing his best for you! When he first came into foster care, he guarded his food, but does not do so now. He is comfortable sharing food and water dishes with the resident Springer. Hank willingly shares his squeaky toys with her too.
Although Hank loves to be brushed, he was afraid of the electric clippers. He had no problem with letting the foster mom cut his nails after a long walk. He behaved beautifully at the vet’s office where they all commented on his shiny black coat and prancing gait. He is good about having his ears cleaned though it is obvious he would prefer to look out the window.
Hank is a beautiful, lovable guy who needs more training. He has a natural flushing ability, keen eyesight and hearing and great love of the outdoors. Agility training would be a natural for him. He would do best in a home with a fenced yard since he loves to run. This athletic guy would do well with an active family and would especially enjoy a daily run. What will help Hank develop from a great puppy to a wonderful mature Springer? A loving family who will give him lots of love, exercise, and training. Make him yours!
