Original: “He is scared when meeting new people or in new situations. As long as one moves slowly with him and talks to him, he does okay.”
When the owner of a Virginia breeding kennel passed away, it was her wish to have MAESSR place her dogs. Handsome is one of these dogs.
Having spent five years as a kennel dog, Handsome did not get a lot of socialization with people nor exposure to things in the outside world. As a result, he is scared when meeting new people or in new situations. As long as one moves slowly with him and talks to him, he does okay. This has improved a lot in the time he has been in his foster home. Because he is frightened, MAESSR will not be placing him with young children because they are unpredictable in their actions and noise levels.
House training is going very well with Handsome. His foster parents just have to make sure he goes out of the doggie door and does his business. Sometimes, he is more interested in what his person is doing when he is outside and he forgets to relieve himself.
He is crate trained but prefers to sleep on a dog bed beside his foster parents’ bed. Handsome walks well on a leash and rides well in the car. Good boy!
Handsome is just now learning to enjoy being petted and rubbed. Now he wants more, but sometimes he gets overwhelmed and runs away. He has been started on an inexpensive supplement to help with his anxiety. It has made a noticeable difference. His adoptive family will be required to keep him on this supplement for a minimum of six months after adoption.
Once this beautiful boy acclimates more to being part of a family, he will be available for adoption.
