Hamlet was brought into a Pennsylvania shelter as a stray, having been seen in the same alleyway looking for food three days in a row. The shelter contacted MAESSR and got him neutered. Now, this young boy is on his journey to a wonderful new life as a MAESSR dog!
His foster mom was surprised to find what a well-behaved dog Hamlet is, especially for his age. She thinks that he was raised indoors and was taught good manners by someone. Completely housebroken, ignoring the resident terrier’s grumbling, and hanging out with the resident Springer came naturally to him. He doesn’t jump up on people, trash dive, or counter-surf and is decent on leash.
Hamlet is fed separately from the resident dogs because they eat at different rates. He shows no aggression when you add or remove food from his bowl. Initially, he wanted to climb the stairs and sleep in the master bedroom, but after a little whimpering the first few nights, he just sleeps on a folded dog blanket and warmly greets his foster parents with a wagging tail in the morning. Hamlet crates if told to do so, but since he doesn’t love it in the crate and is trustworthy outside of it, he doesn’t currently use it. He also respects baby gates for keeping him contained.
Being brushed out is one thing that Hamlet loves and he flops upside down for belly pets, but he’s not sure he loves going to the groomers. He got a bit antsy about the dryer and after thirty minutes got impatient about the clippers buzzing around him, but with patience and in a non-pet store environment, he would probably adapt just fine. If tethered in the car, Hamlet will futz around at the beginning of the ride and at stops, but if he is just loose in the back seat or is given the passenger’s seat, he settles down quickly and just looks out the window.
During the workday, Hamlet flops on the floor near anyone who’s around, just waiting for his lunch time walk. He already has the dinner schedule down and will come over with the resident Springer to “nudge” the humans with a nose if 6 pm comes and goes without the food container being opened. He’s probably been around wood stoves in his prior life, knowing to grab a nearby rug if someone lights kindling on a dreary day.
This handsome boy knows “sit,” “go,” and possibly “down.” Mellow in the house, Hamlet blended quickly into a multi-dog household. He likes walks, but isn’t as critter obsessed as the residents. He’s a Velco dog, happiest when he’s near his humans, but other than an initial whimper when they leave, he’s left uncrated with no issues. He also seems trustworthy off leash, curious about what is going on out in the world, but preferring to follow his foster mom or dad because they’re the people he’s know longest, and as such, should be kept at close range in case they should have a sudden urge to pet him!
Hamlet is looking for a forever home so he can get settled in for the winter. Despite his size, he’s easy to have around, probably preferring at least one other dog companion if his humans worked a full day. Having turned from any tragedy in his previous life, this “sweet prince” would like to share his happiness and love with you.
