Haley was fortunate to find her way to MAESSR after being picked up as a stray in West Virginia. She was suffering from a skin infection and tape worms, both due to the fleas she was carrying. MAESSR provided immediate medical attention, had her spayed, and started her on heartworm and flea preventatives. Haley was as sweet and gentle with the vet and the groomer as she is with her foster family. After getting appropriate care, she is the happy, playful puppy she was meant to be. Haley’s freckled face is accented with brown “eyebrows” and topped with cute little curls that make her look as ornery as she is. When excited, her full tail wags her whole body.
This bundle of energy loves her stuffed toys! She runs all over the house with them, but is happy to stop for a game of tug-of-war. She and the resident Springer wear themselves out wrestling and chasing each other. After a power nap, Haley is ready for more! She also loves her walks. She is still learning not to pull on leash, but time and training will take care of that. A no-pull harness makes going for a walk much easier on everyone. Car rides are another source of excitement, as they usually end up at her favorite walking trail.
Despite her small stature, Haley devours her food with gusto. She sits patiently while waiting for a treat, gently accepts it, and then lies down to savor it. If food is on the counter, Haley walks the length of the counter on her hind legs. Fortunately, her nose comes just to the top of the counter, so she can’t be labeled a thief, yet. Haley’s forever family will have to keep their counters clear once she is tall enough to surf effectively!
Although Haley is not fully housetrained, she is given full run of the house, even when her foster family leaves for short periods. She is responding well to positive training. The baby gate was put back in storage, as she just climbed right over it. Instead, Haley is crate-trained. At night, she sleeps in her foster parents’ room, either in their bed, or on a cushion on the floor. She likes to curl up for naps on the furniture, but her foster family is working to change this habit. They find it hard, though, because she is so cute and cuddly!
MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs under 1 year old to enroll their puppy in an obedience class within 60 days of adoption.
With training, Haley is going to make a wonderful companion to a lucky family. She hopes to find an active family with an older dog to show her the ropes and help release her boundless energy.
