Now is your chance to “Fall in LOVE with a Senior!” MAESSR has a new program to match up our senior and special needs Springers with new, loving families. This is a wonderful opportunity to Fall in LOVE all over again with a dog that really needs you.
Adoption fees are being waived for all seniors (age 9 and older) and for special needs dogs through the end of September. Keep your eyes open for that special one who would fit perfectly into your life! It could be Gracie X; it may be another. Let your heart guide the decision and all else will fall into place!
Original:
Gracie was adopted from a shelter in Maryland three years ago. Unfortunately, when her owner was diagnosed with cancer, the treatment left little time for Gracie to be properly cared for and she was regretfully returned to the shelter. Lucky for Gracie, MAESSR volunteers are always keeping an eye out for Springers in shelters, and in less than 48 hours Gracie was safe and sound in foster care.
This girl is absolutely the sweetest dog her foster mom has met in a long time. She was introduced to the three resident Springers in her foster home with ease and co-exists very peacefully. She played coy for a few days but now she responds to their play invitations by joining into the body checking and sprinting around the backyard. She’s given the cats a sniff or two but largely ignores them. Every once in a while, one of the resident kitties decides to follow her around the backyard and rubs her head under the bottom of Gracie’s chin – very cute! Gracie has impeccable house manners and has not attempted to steal anything from the counters or get onto furniture. Unfortunately, the “not stealing” did NOT carry over to the car, where she helped herself to her foster mom’s leftover lunch on the ride home from the vet! Gracie crates quickly and quietly when her foster parents leave the house and at night. The crate is probably not necessary, but Gracie seems comfortable with it and often opts to sleep in the crate with the door open even when her people are home.
Gracie is the first diabetic dog her foster mom has cared for. Fortunately, tests have shown that Gracie’s blood sugar levels are well controlled as long as she gets her daily doses of insulin. While her foster mom was a little nervous about having to give Gracie two shots a day, it turned out to be a simple undertaking. The needles are tiny and Gracie doesn’t even seem to notice the injections. In fact, if you sweet-talk her, her full tail wags the whole time!
A low to moderate energy Springer, Gracie enjoys trotting around the yard and checking out all the smells. She can often be found chewing on a bone underneath the crepe myrtle. Inside, she is content to curl up on a dog bed and relax with her people. She pulls a little on leash but is learning to walk with her person. Gracie is always up for a car ride. In fact, when she hears car keys jingle, she runs to the front door to meet her foster mom, looking up at her expectantly. If she is told, “Not this time,” she turns around and heads back to her bed. Gracie was a model client for her home grooming and got an A+ from the vet for her great behavior. Even when she had to be at the vet all day for blood work and her dental cleaning, her sweet personality was 100% intact.
Gracie is going to need a special forever family. Although she is very easy to live with, she does have diabetes, which is something that requires on-going attention. If you can commit to giving this sweetheart the care she’ll need to live a happy and healthy life, you just might be her perfect match!
