Grace and her brother Hudson were relinquished to a New York shelter when their elderly owners found the lively, young pair too much to handle. The shelter asked MAESSR for help.
This little girl is an absolute sweetheart who is housetrained and crate trained. The crate is used for sleeping and to restrain her mischievous spirit when foster mom cannot be watching her. She knows “sit,” and is working on “come,” “down,” and “stay.” She is also learning how to walk politely on the leash with the help of a gentle leader. Grace does not have the opportunity to counter-surf, but probably would do so if she could!! She tends to be a gobbler so a slow feed bowl is recommended for her.
She was good while being groomed—brushing, clipping and nail grinding–and rides well crated in the car. Grace does love her stuffed animals and plays happily with her Frisbee.
Grace continues to need structure and socialization. She does tend to be reactive when meeting other people and dogs when leash walking and in stores. MAESSR will require her adoptive family to take her through two series of obedience classes within 90 days of adoption. MAESSR only places puppies – even older ones – in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience. MAESSR believes the decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. Grace quite possibly experienced some harsh training methods before coming into MAESSR’s care, and the obedience classes for her must emphasize positive reinforcement to help her be more comfortable with other dogs and to become the best little Springer girl she can be.
Summertime is a happy time and Grace would love to share it with a family of her own and might welcome a dog friend or dog-friendly cat also. That lucky family will see that the love, effort, and training they put into building this pup’s confidence, security and trust in people will be repaid many times over.
