Update 09/16/09: Boy George is responding nicely with some help on a few issues that come commonly with aging. He did very well in his teeth cleaning and now has pearly whites. X-rays of his hips do reveal he has dysplasia but, with a supplement and regular exercise, he is feeling good. His allergies are in check due to what he is eating, so he’ll need to remain on the food he’s on when his adopting family does the buying. It’s one that is available online or in feed stores. The vet staff was shocked at Georgie’s age. He is so handsome and has a youthful disposition and sweet face.
Georgie’s personality has really emerged as he’s become healthy. His energy level is very good; he’s always ready for a game of ball or a walk but is equally happy to sit quietly with his people or the resident Springer. He is good with a few stairs but would like to avoid lots of stairs in his adopting home. Georgie is so sweet to everyone he meets, human or otherwise, and will make a great addition to most any family.
Original: Through no fault of his own Georgie came to MAESSR. He was loved and cared for, living with his owner his entire life until she became too ill to care for him. He was a sad boy on his first few days in a foster home but adjusted quickly. Georgie is again a happy boy with perfect household manners and a moderate energy level. Don’t be fooled by his age. He sees and hears very well and has earned the nickname Boy George for his sweet, young puppyish face and matching disposition.
Georgie is a terrific house guest and a fast learner; he conquered sit in two days. He’s housebroken, does not counter surf or get on furniture, and has no bad habits. He loves his crate and sleeps there with the door open, allowing him full access to the house with the resident Springer Spaniel. Georgie uses the dog door to the back yard and has a cute habit of periodically poking his head out to have a look around and let his family know all is well. He’s a quiet boy and doesn’t speak often but, when he’s dancing to go on a walk, he’ll tell his family if they don’t move fast enough getting out of the door.
This young-at-heart senior loves walks and does the cutest little leap and dance when his foster parents come home or when he sees the leash come out; he does not pull and the squirrels in his neighborhood don’t tempt him. Georgie enjoys riding in the car, where he also is a perfect gentleman, sitting quietly in the back seat and looking out the window. He enjoys being groomed. And, like any Velcro Springer, he loves attention and wants to be with his people. Also like most Springers, Georgie has a curious personality; he likes to see what his people are doing and help with projects around the house.
Georgie’s never met a ball he didn’t love! He carries his yellow ball on walks in the park and is always up for playing ball inside or out. He is not obsessive, however, and will leave the ball if his foster parents aren’t ready to play. He is learning to play with the resident Springer and socializes with her and neighborhood dogs well.
Georgie is very friendly with everyone he meets. He was even affectionate to the vet after an exam. The vet found a few things that may require another visit but for now, giving Georgie a few weeks to regain weight lost during a recent boarding is the best thing for Georgie. A dental is on his short list. Also, Georgie gets around just fine, aside from being stiff at times. For now, supplements for joint support have been recommended, and, depending on their benefit, x-rays may be advised to check for injury and/or hip dysplasia. The one other thing that Georgie has is a history of allergies. Right now, they’re mild and involve some scratching. His family is managing this with a change in food. Fingers crossed that this will be give Georgie complete relief.
A home that matches his moderate energy level is what Georgie would most enjoy. Frequent shorter walks are better for this boy than jogs or very long walks. He does fine on a few outside stairs but does not want to use stairs in the house and would do better with one-level living, or, at least living in a situation that does not require him to use many stairs.
Georgie is an enthusiastic, smart and happy boy who has lots of love to give and is sure to be a terrific companion. More on Boy Georgie coming.
