Gauley is one of 3 puppies that were born in a Kentucky shelter the day after their mother was dropped off by her owner. Since the springer rescue group covering Kentucky did not have a foster home available, MAESSR was approached to help and shortly the family moved to West Virginia. Over the next month everyone steadily gained weight, including the mother who was severely underweight when she whelped. At 6 weeks of age, Gauley and his brothers were fully weaned, active, and eager for a bigger world each day. They’ve just moved to a 2nd MAESSR foster home to begin their vetting and socialization.
Gauley got his name while in West Virginia. He was the first of the puppies to show playfulness and he ran with opportunity. When a full–size Kong ball was put in the nest, he was the first to approach and nudge it with his nose. When a soft puppy-size ball was added, he was the first to take it in his mouth and prance around with it. He instantly loved the tug rope. He also decided early on that the water bowl was for more than refreshment. Though he couldn’t quite swim in it, he did paddle around…….as many folks do on the nearby Gauley River.
Like all puppies, Gauley will require a good education. MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs under 1 year old to enroll their puppy in an obedience class within 60 days of adoption.
Gauley and his brothers are springer mixes and oh, so precious! All are incredibly soft to touch and have shiny coats. Their daddy in unknown but their mother is a beautiful field-bred Springer with a very steady and soft temperament. She has beautiful movement and is very athletic. She was a good mother to her pups and oversaw the human care they needed but was never, ever defensive of them. The future is bright for these little guys. If a puppy is in your plans, be sure to follow the progress of Gauley, Cass and Seneca! Every one of them is a keeper!!!
