Garth has been in a shelter for six months. We only found out about him last week. We don’t have the clear story, but he appears to have been used as a stud dog for a backyard breeder. At 12 years of age, his use as a stud dog was minimal due to AKC restrictions. We think, but don’t know for sure, that Garth was thrown out when his usefulness had come to an end.
We were able to get Garth out and transferred him to a temporary foster home. From there he was to go to his permanent home. Sadly, it never happened. It’s difficult to write about Garth and what he must have gone through. His foster mom took him to the vet where tests revealed that his kidneys and liver were shutting down. The poor dog was always thirsty and would pee in his sleep. He was so thirsty that he would drink dirty, soapy bath water if given an opportunity. Despite all coaxing, he would not eat. We could not let him suffer. As the last people that loved him, we let Garth go to the Bridge. We trust he’ll be waiting there for us.
