Update 01/20/2024: Gabby barked because everyone else was barking. That’s what a pack does, right?
Not much has changed for Gabby in her foster home. She hasn’t officially met children, having only watched the neighbor’s kids go in and out of the house. Gabby barked because everyone else was barking. That’s what a pack does, right?
In her foster home, Gabby gets along great with the rest of the dogs. She doesn’t necessarily play with them, but she doesn’t try to start anything. The only exception is the resident 16-year-old, senile, blind, and deaf Cocker…Gabby has no tolerance for this poor pup.
On the health front, Miss Gabby had a dental cleaning done so now her teeth are pearly white!
Hopefully the new year brings Gabby closer to her new forever family.
Original: “As for house manners, she is fine in the house but will dig outside if she’s alone and no one is watching or playing with her.”
Gabby and her housemate Beef came to MAESSR because their Pennsylvania owner had too many dogs in the home. The owner rescued them from a breeder about a year ago bringing them into her home that already had three Cocker Spaniels. The owner thought this would be an easy adjustment, but she found five dogs too much to handle. So, she relinquished Gabby and Beef to MAESSR.
Housetrained and crate trained, Gabby does not have a clear signal that she needs to go out. She just may whine or pace a bit. She is taken out regularly with the resident dogs. Initially, she was allowed free reign of the house when her foster mom was gone, but after Gabby tore apart a dog bed one day, she is now crated when the dogs are alone. Gabby doesn’t have a definite place she likes to sleep at night—her crate, the couch, a dog bed, someone’s lap!
As for house manners, she is fine in the house but will dig outside if she’s alone and no one is watching or playing with her. Counter-surfing isn’t a problem because she isn’t really tall enough to reach anything. If given the opportunity, she probably would get into the trash. Dogs are allowed on the couch in her foster home—to Gabby’s delight!
Gabby gets along with the resident dogs but doesn’t actively engage with them in play unless they are playing as a group. Fed in her crate, Gabby will low growl if a dog gets too close to her bowl but she does not snap or react further. She is good with the resident cats and would probably be good with children because of her good temperament although she has not had any contact with them in her foster home.
This nine-year-old has a high energy level. She constantly wants her favorite Kong or tennis ball thrown for her. She has ripped apart the squeaky toys in her foster home but she doesn’t chew anything that is inappropriate—except for the dog bed.
Gabby’s knowledge of basic commands is limited to “sit” and “come” and she does know her name. She is pretty good with walking on a leash and probably could be trusted off leash. When she meets a person or dog while on a walk, she is friendly but just keeps moving. On car rides, Gabby does well either crated or not.
While her foster mom was grooming her, Gabby just wanted to lie down on the table! She pulled her paws back when her nails were being Dremeled but she allowed it. Good girl! Although Gabby doesn’t love having her ears cleaned, she will allow a quick clean.
A very good girl at the vet, Gabby was found to be Lyme positive and have anaplasmosis and hookworms. She has subsequently completed treatment for all three and is a healthy girl. A dental is being scheduled. When spayed, Gabby had a lump on her vulva removed which was determined just to be a lipoma. Gabby arrived at her foster home weighing 47 lbs. but with lots of exercise and kibble portion control, she is now down to 43 lbs. Her vet would like her to weigh under 40 lbs, due to her size. Overall, Gabby is a healthy girl!
Gabby would love an active forever family since she is not a low-key Springer. She loves going on walks and playing in the yard. She doesn’t want to be left alone in the house too long so if her people were retired or worked from home, she would be happiest (and not destructive.)
Does this description match your family? If so, see if Gabby would be the perfect active Springer for you!
