Original:
Gabby came to MAESSR by way of a shelter where she was relinquished when her owner could no longer care for her. When she first arrived in her foster home, this strong but thin bundle of energy and joy bounded her way through the backyard and tried to capture the neighbor’s cat who now knows to stay at home! Despite this exciting introduction, Gabby’s foster mom says she was well-behaved in the car ride home and during a subsequent trip to the vets.
Gabby welcomes human company and has done well with children as young as four, but she needs to work on a more gentle approach to greeting people by keeping all four feet on the ground! This exuberant four year old is tolerated by the small, more staid resident dog, but is intimidated by the larger “cousin” dogs. It is believed she would do very well with playful dogs more her size.
Since the resident dog is permitted to get on furniture, Gabby does too, but she gets down when told. At night she sleeps in the bedroom with her foster mom, but Gabby stays on the floor. Her foster mom is working with her on improving her manners in the kitchen as Gabby is a counter-surfer. Crate training is also being worked on since Gabby gets into mischief when left alone for an hour or just a few minutes. During this unsupervised time, Gabby has been guilty of inappropriate chewing, opening boxes, counter-surfing, and getting into the recycling bag. Her foster mom is trying to figure out if she has separation anxiety, is bored, or is just a little rascal! As Gabby is getting more and more comfortable with her crate, she will probably be spending more time in it when her foster mom has to be out of the house. Then, there will be no opportunity to get into trouble!
Generally housetrained, Gabby just had one little accident on arrival at new home and another when her foster mom didn’t respond to her request to go out soon enough. Otherwise, all is good in that department. Gabby already knows the commands “sit,” “paw,” and “off” and she is being taught “come.” Her foster mom is also working with Gabby on leash walking since she can be a puller.
Watch for more on Gabby as she settles into her crate in her foster home and as she learns about what is expected of an active Springer girl living inside!
