During his short life, through no fault of his own, Fritz has already been with four different families. He was bought from a breeder by a North Carolina person who was physically unable to care for him and then spent time with two different caretakers before MAESSR was asked to help.
Fritz is very lovable. He loves to be with his people and considers himself a lap dog. He gets along with other dogs, plays well with them and has shown an indifference to the resident cats. He knows those pesky felines are around but pays little or no attention to them. His exposure to children has been limited to an occasional meeting on a walk in the park. He behaved very well during these times. Otherwise, he’s affectionate and loves to snuggle.
The new boy is adapting very well to his foster home and family. He plays actively and cooperatively with the resident dog. He is housetrained and waits at the door to go outside; sometimes when he is excited, he may let out a little urine. Because of the many changes in his first year, Fritz shows some stress when left alone and has chewed things when left by himself in or out of his crate. He does not like being closed in the crate but does sleep in it during the night, on occasion, as long as the door is open. When left and when sleeping, Fritz stays in the family room with his canine foster sister. He eats with the family in the kitchen, but not at the table. He’s a speedy eater and constantly looks for more to eat.
First and foremost, his folks realize that Fritz, as well as his foster sister, is still a puppy. Given that, he has shown very good manners around the house. He will from time to time do some counter-surfing, but once reminded not to do so, he will stop. Fritz leaves the trash alone and does not jump on furniture (unless given permission); however, he does like to chew and dig. He follows commands such as “sit,” “come,” “stay,” and “lie down.” His leash walking is a work in progress but will improve as MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and, as has been noted, they do chew on things! The decision to adopt a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs one year old and younger to enroll their puppy in obedience classes within 60 days of adoption.
Fritz is always on the “go.” Full of energy, he loves to run in the park and lake. He greets people and other dogs in a friendly manner and loves to play with his foster sister inside and out. He has a variety of toys which he shares willingly. Mr. Owl is his favorite! He is a good watch dog protecting the house and his people.
On car rides, Fritz is fine on short trips. On trips of an hour or longer, he may become car sick. While at the vet’s office, Fritz was a bit nervous but did a nice job listening to the doctor and staff. He had his ears cleaned with no problem. Handsome has his first appointment with the groomer next month.
Fritz needs to run and play–a fenced yard, dog park or local people park—he must have room to roam. He also should be supervised at all times. This youngster needs stability and love to reassure him that he is a good boy and will not be sent away again. As a puppy, he is still learning to follow the rules. He wants to please his people, and so doesn’t take criticism lightly. He needs constant approval and rewards for his good behavior. This love needs someone who is patient and has tolerance and an understanding of this breed’s development and traits so that Mr. Fritz can grow and develop into a kind, loving and obedient adult Springer spaniel.
