Updated 7/18/06: Fritz was relinquished to MAESSR because his owner was planning on traveling and did not have time for him any longer. His coat needed attention, so he got a major haircut on his first day in rescue. Then, Fritz spent his first full day with his foster mom at a MAESSR picnic in Pennsylvania. He charmed everyone he met with his sweet personality and good looks. After a long day of partying, he helped his foster mom load up all her loot and sped off to meet the foster siblings at home in New Jersey. He sat quietly in the back for the 3.5-hour trip, only getting up to look out the window a few times.
At 43 pounds Fritz is on the smaller side for a male Springer. His coat is that of bench bred Springers with freckles on his front paws and on his cute turned-up nose. Now that he is on a different food, his coat is starting to shine. He is in generally good health and has just the right amount of energy. His new home should plan on giving him lots of exercise to keep his weight optimum and his muscles toned. Fritzie was alone a lot in his previous home where he was allowed to free-feed and chew on rocks and bones. The result is that his teeth are very worn for such a youngster, but that in no way hinders his ability to enjoy his chow and to chow down. Indeed, Fritz could lose 3-4 pounds! When mealtime arrives, this is when the show begins. He starts dancing around in circles and sings his own opera – so cute! Homemade peanut butter/blueberry frosty paws are his favorite treat, and he enjoys a stuffed Kong and marrow bones too.
Fritz has adjusted well to his foster home and is a joy to be around. He has wonderful house manners and does not jump on furniture or trash pick. He is house trained and left with free run of the house while foster mom is away for up to 9 hours without incident. He knows the commands, “sit”, “stay”, “lie down”, and “go to your bed.” Leash walking is a dream with this sweetie, he walks calmly next to you and never pulls or weaves. Fritz is so smart and obedient that he would excel in the obedience ring or at agility.
During the first few days Fritz was in his foster home, he appeared to be very quiet and laid back, not participating in play with the resident Springers. With a little time to get acquainted, things have changed, and his true young Springer personality has emerged……woo hoo! He loves to run and mouth play with his foster sister. The entire time they will be circling each other and making little noises. A recent trip to the dog park brought out the athletic side of this boy. He dove headfirst into the pond and came up swimming with just the top of his head showing. He chased tennis balls, brought them back, and gently handed them to the thrower. He stood back for a moment when all the dogs started chasing a runner until his foster mom gave him permission to go chase and off, he went full speed. In the back yard he circles the kiddie pool and dives in, stretching out with his legs behind him. All the time he is looking at me with a silly grin on his face as if to say, “Isn’t life grand, foster mommy?!?”
Fritz is so loving and frisky that he would do well in a home with older children as well as another dog. This sweet Springer deserves a family that will keep him active and included in their daily lives. Fritz has been lonely too long! Are you that special active family for Fritz?
