Update 12/11/10:
Fred returned to MAESSR when his family’s living conditions changed and they could no longer accommodate this sweet boy. He is housetrained and does not counter-surf, trash dive, or do anything inappropriate in the house. He gets along with the other dogs in his foster home and is not interested in the cats. He has not come in contact with any children while in foster care but greets visitors with a wagging tail and excellent manners.
If his people are on the sofa, Fred will ask for permission to join them but, if no one is home, he feels free to make himself comfortable. This appears to be something he has always been allowed. He has complete run of the house and is very good when left alone; there are no separation issues or barking. Always up for a ride in the car, he will sit in the back seat or nap. He loves his walks and can be completely trusted off leash. Even small critters won’t distract this calm gent and he will come as soon as he is called. Good boy, Fred!
This boy is so well behaved and accommodating that it took his foster mom a few days to figure out what commands he knew, as he would do most of them before he was asked! His list turned out to be long, and includes “sit,” “down,” “come,” “go to bed,” “lie down,” “stay,” “out,” and “no” and the list keeps growing! Fred is an absolute delight.
A playful fellow too, Fred loves his toys and will entertain himself if no one is interested in playing with him. When his foster family comes home, he is there with one of his favorites in his mouth, just in case. This is a very gentle dog who loves to cuddle and just be near his people. Occasionally, he will carry a toy outside to go potty and forget to bring it back inside! He sleeps through the night on a dog bed beside his foster mom’s bed, although he would much rather be in the bed with her. In the mornings he waits patiently for everyone to get up and start the day.
Fred just wants a home of his own, where he can love his people and make their world a better place. Ask about adding this sweet and smart Springer to your family today!
Update 4/30/03:
Fred found a wonderful family to begin his new life with!
Original:
Fred is a 1 year old, black and white, neutered male located in Greenbelt, Maryland. Fred was found along Route 450 in Maryland by a wonderful person that just happens to work in a vet’s office and has a springer of her own! After several attempts to locate his owners, Fred was cleaned up, neutered, and started some basic obedience training. He knows sit, stay, and come. He is good on a leash and uses a harness. Fred will stay in the yard as long as his human friends are with him. He is allowed to run off leash in the woods behind his house. He may initially track a scent, but soon comes back to his humans.
Fred is housebroken and crate trained. Fred will chew on inappropriate items if left alone in the house. He loves to play with the other springer he lives with, but his much older brother is not happy to play with Fred! Fred is a typical playful pup. He loves to play ball and will bring it back for more play. Fred absolutely loves to swim.
Fred is good with children, but may jump on them. It would be best to place Fred with children six and older. Fred has expressed an interest in cats, but has not been that close to one. His owner feels that he will not pounce on them. Fred does not beg for food. He will counter-surf if given the chance, but gets down when corrected. He is not food or toy aggressive. His owner can take items from his mouth. Fred is allowed on the furniture in his home, but does not get on the beds. He sleeps on the floor in the bedroom at night. Fred will wake his owner up at night to go out, at any hour. This is his worst habit.
Fred does well with grooming. He is good with a bath, tolerates having his nails clipped, and is good with having his ears cleaned. Fred likes to go for car rides. As I type this, Fred is on his way to North Beach for a swim, lucky Fred!
Do you have the time and energy for Fred?
