Updated 12/6/05: The latest on Freckles is that her splint has come off and she is so happy. She still needs two weeks of quiet to strengthen the muscles that haven’t been used since her mishap, but once that’s over and her leash comes off, her foster mom thinks this girl won’t know herself! And neither will the two resident Springers who have been just out of reach of her puppy antics while she’s been recovering! Freckles will likely play to exhaustion, take a nap, and then start all over again, catching up for much lost time!!
Freckles has been taught to sit and stay politely while her dinner is being served. Just one of those nice manners that youngsters can easily learn. She will be spayed soon and then be ready to run and play and cuddle to her heart’s content with her new family. Wouldn’t you love to be part of that???
Updated 11/10/05: One never knows what may pop up when fostering a puppy, but for Freckles’ family, there has been one particularly eventful day recently. It all began after a walk, in the backyard late one morning. The two resident Springers and Freckles had been out in the backyard and were now waiting for lunch. Without warning, Freckles started yelping and laid down on the floor. It was obvious to her foster mom that her leg hurt, though there was no apparent reason.
A trip to the vet diagnosed her problem. Freckles had a broken leg, specifically, a broken tibia. She also had an upset tummy and no wonder! On doctors’ orders, this pup is now confined to her crate and will have very limited exercise for the next 8 weeks. A full recovery is expected, and in the meantime, all visitors are invited to sign her cast!
Original: Freckles is MAESSR’s newest foster pup. She was left with a collar and leash outside a shelter in western Pennsylvania and rescued from there. Her name is perfect, as she is flecked with freckles everywhere, even along her full tail! As with all intact dogs in MAESSR’s program, Freckles will be spayed before she joins her adopting family.
This precious bundle is full of puppy energy and always ready for any fun and games. While timid at first, she soon warms up and is ready to cuddle and play! She has already made friends with the two resident Springers and has engaged them in little antics. Freckles has lots of fun with her buddies, and they are helping hone her “doggie” manners. She’s learning how to play and when it’s time to take a break as well. All are very important manners for puppies to learn at this age.
Puppies also need lots of supervised play with people, and frequent trips outside for potty relief. Her foster mom is seeing to it that Freckles has these opportunities too. She is living with 3 children, ages 7, 10, and 12, and does well with them. She also has met other children at a scout meeting and shared her kisses on eager hands, and a few smiling faces. When on her leash, Freckles is a proud, trotting little girl. She will help to pull the leash along and seems to be saying, “Come on, Mom, let’s go”! Freckles loves to chew with her sharp puppy teeth and is easily attracted to a soft toy or squeaky. After a hard play, she goes outside for a quick walk to “find your spot, be quick,” and then settles on her blanket in a crate with a hard chew bone. Napping comes quickly after that!
Her foster family doesn’t need an alarm with Freckles in their home! She is late to bed and early to rise but is sleeping the night long. She wakes her family for breakfast. Even when starting the day with puppy breath in her face, her foster mom says, “There’s nothing better!” More on Freckles as she readies for her new beginning.
