Original: “MAESSR’s new boy is one handsome pup who loves, loves, loves his new-found comforts, friends and family.”
Forrest and his sister Jenni, Tennessee natives, were relinquished to MAESSR as a result of a divorce and household move. They had been living outside at a friend’s house, but the family decided they deserved a much better life. MAESSR was contacted and volunteers quickly moved this pair to their foster home in Virginia.
When Forrest went to the vet the day after he arrived in his foster home, the examination revealed he was heartworm positive, had a urinary tract infection, had a heavy load of hookworms and whipworms, and tested positive for ehrlichia. He was immediately started on an antibiotic for the urinary tract infection. He was also started on the antibiotic for treatment of the ehrlichia, even though he was not showing any symptoms.
Since Forrest did not have any microfilaria in the sample for his heartworm test, the “slow kill” method for heartworm treatment was determined to be best for him. The slow kill method involves giving the dog a Heartgard Plus (heartworm preventative) twice a month for a year. This slowly kills the adult heartworms. Most dogs will totally clear the heartworms within a year, but some take up to two years to do so. MAESSR will supply the adopter with one year’s worth of Heartgard Plus. The adopter will be responsible for ENSURING that Forrest is given his “pill” twice a month. MAESSR will pay for the heartworm test at the end of one year. If Forrest is then heartworm free, everything will be fantastic! If Forrest is NOT heartworm free, MAESSR will provide the adopting family with another year’s supply of Heartgard and will pay for the heartworm test at the end of the second year.
This young man has decided that he LOVES being an inside boy and has not had any accidents in his foster home in spite of having a urinary tract infection. He has required no special feeding arrangements. He took up residence on the sofa in his foster home and did not want to get down. He is generally crated at night, but his foster mom let him have a night of freedom and discovered he really wanted to sleep in the big bed with his foster parents. He was told “NO,” and he settled down on a dog bed for the night. Forrest wants to please his people and will do anything he can to keep them happy. His foster mom thinks he is afraid he will be put back outside.
Forrest rides well in the car. He does pull on the leash at the beginning of a walk, but settles down and walks nicely. He was a perfect gentleman at the vet and groomer—what a super Springer spaniel.
MAESSR’s new boy is one handsome pup who loves, loves, loves his newly found comforts, friends and family. He is a special fella who is going to make someone very happy. Are you ready to offer him a forever home and help him learn the fun of playing with toys and being his person’s very special dog?
