MAESSR was called in to help when Flossie and her sister Sandy 4 needed a new home. The North Carolina family they had loved since puppyhood was moving to a new home near a very busy highway and feared for the girls’ safety. MAESSR had intended to keep the sisters together, but both are doing very well in separate foster homes.
Flossie’s vet exam showed arthritis in both hind quarter joints and a severe urinary tract infection. She tested positive for ehrlichia and heartworm. This love has begun the “slow-kill” method for treatment of the heart worm infection. The “slow-kill” method involves giving the infected dog monthly Heartgard tabs over the course of a year. (Doxyclycline therapy is sometimes done as part of the treatment as well.) At the end of the year, the dog is re-tested for heartworms. MAESSR will supply the medication to the dog’s adoptive family and will pay for the follow-up vet visit and heartworm test. Although most dogs are heartworm-free after one year, MAESSR will pay for another year of treatment if the dog is still heartworm positive.
Flossie is a well-behaved dog whose only bad habit seems to be that she likes to dig. She does also have a fear of thunder due to a violent storm she experienced. This senior lady is housetrained and crate trained. She knows basic commands but is a pretty passive soul. Flossie is a super duper Springer that does not counter-surf, chew or get on the furniture. She shows no separation anxiety, loves car rides and was good at the groomer’s. On top of everything else, Flossie walks well on leash— what a wonderful girl!!
