Update 08/25/11:
What a difference a few weeks of antibiotics made! Fletcher’s skin condition has cleared, his hair is growing in nicely, and he is a handsome, handsome boy.
Fletcher is very affectionate, loves his tummy scratched and is quite hospitable to visitors. He’s quick to answer the door with a stuffed toy in his mouth and is ready to play with the first person to cross the threshold. He gets along well with other dogs, but is a little too curious with very small dogs (such as miniature dachshunds), and tends to intimidate them. He loves to ride in the car and sits quietly in the back, looking out the window. He’s always ready to go for a walk but still needs some work on his leash skills.
Kids love Fletcher and he is very patient with them, letting them pet and coddle him. After everyone goes home, he loves to curl up in a ball and sleep for a bit – recharging his energy for the next adventure!
Fletch will make a great addition to a family or a companion for a single person. He’ll keep you laughing with his crazy facial expressions, and he actually smiles! Who couldn’t use a little more laughter in their life?
Original:
Fletcher was surrendered by his Virginia family solely because of financial issues. He was an integral part of their family, but they were unable to afford the ongoing costs of his care and veterinary visits. He has adapted well to his foster home, interacting nicely with the other dog in the home and always eager to play.
Like many Springers, Fletcher has a great appetite. He currently weighs about 52 pounds and loves the occasional treat. He likes to watch while the humans in his foster family are eating, but doesn’t beg for their food. He does have a history of counter-surfing in his previous home.
Fletcher is house-trained and has full run of his foster home. He was crated without a problem at his previous home. He sleeps on a dog bed in his foster parents’ room and has been sleeping through the night. Fletcher gets excited when visitors come as he thinks everyone must be coming to see him! He doesn’t jump up, but will sniff and ask for a scratch before going on his way. While he doesn’t have separation anxiety, he will cry at the door for a few minutes after his foster parents leave.
Sitting in the very back, looking out the window is Fletcher’s preferred way to take a ride in the car. He also enjoys playing catch and running circles in the yard. Fletcher knows the basic commands of sit, stay, and down. Leash walking is a challenge as he likes to pull, but with a little work and more frequent practice, he’s sure to excel. Off leash, Fletcher responds well to the come command, but he hasn’t been tested outside of the fenced yard. He doesn’t seem interested in swimming, despite having a pool at his disposal.
Fletcher is currently taking antibiotics to clear up a skin infection. Once the infection is under control, he will be neutered and ready to begin the search for his forever home. As a gentle and social boy, he will make a wonderful addition to a very lucky family.
